Position Paper

Technology has become a large portion of what we use in the classroom now these days. From

the fancy touch screen whiteboards all the way to tables for the students so they can take notes or

take tests. Educators are able to grade things digitally and much faster, and students are able to

research things faster using the internet. While technology has done great things for us in the

classroom, I believe that it is going to be extremely detrimental to our students and educators.

“Use of technology can often lead to antisocial situations. At times, students tend to lose their

ability to communicate in social situations because of continuous use of technology”

(IndiaEducation) Technology makes it easy for students to draw away from their peers and when

they do that, communication is lessened. Communication is key in the classroom, and it is so

important because students need to learn social skills and work with others to be open to new

ideas. “Technology may look extremely accessible to all kinds of people, but that’s not always

the case. There exist many schools which don’t have enough funds to make use of technology”

(IndiaEducation). Technology is also very difficult for all students and all schools to access.

When one student has access to that and the other doesn't, that is when their education now

becomes unequal. No student should have to fight to get the same education as their peer, and

technology puts students in those positions. Technology has become wonderful in so many ways

but I feel that the bad outweighs the good as our students are able to do half their work by using

a device. I am a firm believer that the work students do helps them grow and learn as they are

challenged.

Identification of Standards
Upon reading both standards there were so many similarities and differences. One thing that is

different between the two is that the ISTE standards are very broad and general, but when you

look at the Nevada standards, it is broken down. The teacher has standards, the students have

standards, and it sets up assignment standards. One of the similarities that I noticed was that

Digital Citizen is a huge thing when it comes to both of these sites. Even though ISTE doesn't go

into depth of the digital citizen and Nevada standards do. It is important that Digital Citizen is

spoken about in both because learning the rules about technology and how to properly use it

safely is smart. Another thing that both standards have in common is they both dive into depth on

designing, thinking, and creativity. ISTE has many points that talk about those three things and

the Nevada standards goes into depth on all three for the student and teacher.

Lesson Plan

-Title: Kahoot Wonder Activity

-Grade Level: 5th grade

-Technology Standard: Global Collaborator

-Learning Objective: The students are to recall and expand upon their knowledge from reading

the book ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio. They will use their books to recall what they have learned

and see who has read the assignments given.

-Materials: A computer per group of 4/ Wonder book/ Projector

-Group Size: Group the class into groups of 4 or 5.

-Procedures: First turn on the projector and turn on the Kahoot.com application. Log into your

Kahoot account and open the Wonder Quiz tab. Have the student go to google and type in
kahoot.it. It will ask the students for a code and the code they need will be displayed on the

projector. All of the groups will come up with a team name and once they do it will appear on

the screen on the projector. Once all groups have entered their group names it will be time to

begin. Click the start button and begin. The students will see the question on the board and all of

the multiple-choice answers. They will quickly discuss with their team before they click what the

answer is that appears on their devices. They will go through a series of questions with their

friends and when the questions are over, we will see what team has the most points. In between

each question take the time to explain why some of the answers are right and why the others are

wrong so that the students understand why they answered what they did.

-Student Evaluation: While the students are discussing in their groups, I will be watching to see

who is answering and who is not. Who is participating and who is sitting back letting the group

do the rest of the work. As the class answers the questions I can gauge where the class is as a

whole and how well they understood the chapter/book we have read.

Student Sample

There is really nothing that the student gives to the teacher when they are done with this

assignment. Since the answers are all picked digitally, the teacher can see the report of the

answers from his or her side of the program. Below I will attach a picture of what the class will

see once they create their group names.
