Luca Mantovanelli

THREE JAZZ
STANDARD JAMS
Jazz Blues
Lick 02

JTC SAYS:
Here’s where things change. In the 8th measure of a standard blues we’d expect to
be still on the I chord (F7) or maybe dropping down to the VI (D7). Instead, we have
Am7 and D7b9 creating II-V-I move into Gm7. Luca uses D Superlocrian (D Eb F Gb
Ab Bb C) for the Am-D7. The Gm7 then becomes the II of a II-V-I back to the home
key of F. Luca mostly uses G Dorian (G A Bb C D E F) or F major here, except for a
burst of C Superlocrian (C Db Eb Fb Gb Ab Bb) over C7.
At the end of the lick, check out the parallel major triad lick, moving up in minor
3rds... F, Ab, B, D.
