AND TYCO To a generation weaned on the multiple miracles of color television. jet air travel at speeds faster than sound and even the conquering of space . . . the impact of rail roading on the American scene beginning in the mid 1800's may be difficult to comprehend. Yet it isa fact that beginning then and lasting for nearly 2 century, a compelling fascination with railroading con- vinced Americans in every walk 8f life that the nation's “manifest destiny” was to be reached on steel rails stretching the length and breadth of the land. During that century, America fought four wars to their victorious conclusions riding behind the direct descen: dents of The Best Friend of Charleston. The sights, the sounds, the smells of railroading fed a national folklore that will live as long as stories are told and songs are sung. 1 your dealer But today, even though America is threaded with rails and our national economy could not survive without great railroad systems . itis left toa Tyco to keep the reality of a great past alive... if only in miniature. In designing and producing the small as well as the great locomotives that advanced America’s destiny we ate always keenly aware of this. Future messages here will tell you something about the locomotives that are presently in the Tyco line. and about those that are being added. : " 1,2 ! 7a Y The Other Name for Quality 4, 08997 January 1968 VOLUME 35, NUMBER 1 Gordon Odegard- ~~ Associate Editor William R Ream - =< Auociate Baitor Joho T.
