BSIA – 2A Answer in Chap 1 – Act 1 08/26/21

1. Differentiate Information Technology from Information and Communications Technology. (5pts.)

 According to (chron.com) Information technology, it covers all technological systems

that is applied when operating or performing business processes in a workplace of one’s
firm, whereas information communication technology focuses exactly on technology
where it can be able to communicate the two or more diverse groups of an organization
or people.

2. Describe the devices introduced for each generation of computers. (5pts.)

 According to (tutorialspoint.com, webopedia.com, shivajicollege.ac.in &

mhconsults.com) The first generation of computers, the Electronic Numeric Integrator
and Calculator (ENIAC) was introduced and was considered as the first-generation
computer. It was a modular computer composed of several panels capable of
performing different functions such as storing limited or small amount of information
and only do arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction up to 10 digits. On
the second generation, TRANSISTORS was introduced and are used as the interior
sections of the computer since they are smaller, faster, and more dependable that the
vacuum tubes of the first-generation computers. Also, it generates less heat and
consumed less electricity but were still very costly. INTEGRATEDCIRCUIT(IC) which was
invented by Jack Kilby was introduced during the third generation and replaced the
transistors as the interior sections to build the computer since a single IChasmany
transistors, resistors, and capacitors that even the full circuit board of a transistor can be
replaced entirely with one chip. In addition to this, it is smaller, unfailing, and effective
computers wherein remote processing, time-sharing, and multi-programming operating
systems were used. On the other hand, during the fourth generation, VLSI also known as
VERY LARGE-SCALE INTEGRATED CIRCUITS were used to build computer since these
circuits have about 5,000 transistors and other circuit elements with their connected
circuits on a single chip known as the microprocessor. Lastly, during the fifth generation,
ULTRA LARGE-SCALE INTEGRATION or TECHNOLOGY or ULSI which is developed by VLSI
was introduced. It involves computer intelligence which is associated with AI (Artificial
Intelligence), natural language processing and expert systems that interpret the means
and practices of producing computers that think like human beings.

3. Distinguish data from information. (5pts.)

 According to (byjus.com) Simply put, data can be a number, symbol, character, word,
codes, graphs, etc. where in Each piece of data is a little fact that doesn’t mean much on
its own. In contrast, information is the data put into context. Information is the result of
a processed, interpreted, and organized data.

4. Briefly explain various input function, output function and storage function of the computer.
(5pts.)
 According to (digitalworld839.com & computernetworkingnotes.com)

 Input function – this function involves the use of a piece of equipment/hardware which
helps us enter data into a computer.
 Output function – involves the use of equipment/hardware which gives out the result of
the entered input, once it is processed or converted from machine language to a
human-understandable language
 Storage function – this function allows us to save the processed data for later use. The
computer uses two types of storage components namely, temporary, and permanent.

5. Distinguish primary memory from secondary memory in computer. (5pts.)

 According to (guru99.com) Primary memory, also known as internal memory, is directly

accessed by the processing unit while Secondary memory that is also known as a Backup
memory or Auxiliary memory cannot be accessed directly by the processor.

6. Identify the services available through a worldwide web. (5pts.)

 According to (kb.iu.edu) the World Wide Web lets you access many distinct Internet
services through a common set of protocols. Wherein in a single application, the web
browser can access most of these services and typically has the ability to launch helper
applications or use plug-ins for services and file types it cannot access directly.

7. Differentiate an operating system from applications software. (5pts.)

 According to (geeksforgeeks.org & pediaa.com) Operating system acts as the interface

between the user and the system hardware. It is responsible for all functions of the
computer system. It is also responsible for handling both software and hardware
components and maintaining the device's working properly. All computer programs and
applications need an operating system to perform any task. Application software, on the
other hand, is a type of software that is designed to do a certain set of tasks. It is a form
of software that runs or executes on the user's request. It performs single tasks. These
software applications are specifically developed to solve certain problems like document
creation, image editing, calculation, etc.

8. Distinguish between wired and wireless network technologies. (5pts.)

 According to (computernetworkingclass.blogspot.com & ipwithease.com) wireless refers

to medium made of electromagnetic waves or infrared waves. All the wireless devices
will have antenna or sensors. Wireless network does not use wires for data or voice
communication; it uses radio frequency waves. Wired network, on the other hand, is
used to carry different forms of electrical signals from one end to the other. Mostly in
wired network one internet connection is being taken using T1 line, cable modem or
using any other means. This connection is shared among multiple devices using wired
network concept.

9. Discuss how technologies, computers, devices and the web are used in education, government,
finance, retail, entertainment, health care, science, travel, publishing, and manufacturing. (5pts.)

 According to (turbofuture.com, itutorialunikl.blogspot.com &

protutorapps.com)

 Technology, computer, devices and web are used by various sectors and industries in
many ways. Example is how the technology has greatly expanded access to education.
Before, books were rare and people had limited access to educational opportunities
unlike today, where educational books, audio, images and videos are available over the
Internet. The healthcare industry has also evolved greatly over the years, and much of
that change has been driven by technology. Technological advancement gave way for
this industry to be able to keep electronic records, do personalized treatment, use high
tech surgical equipment and many more. In terms of transformation, technology has so
much to offer. You can travel to your destination faster because of the different vehicles
that is available now.
 Technology has also helped in the advancement of science. Well, there’s no technology
without science after all. Financing business and even the government was made easy
by the software and applications that the accountants and auditors can use. They can
easily keep track on the money like how and where they are spent. Manufacturing
equipment is indeed useful in making the production easier and faster. In terms of
entertainment and publishing, technology has created a platform where people can
create contents and publish anything in no time. This made it easier to disseminate and
it is also more convenient and quicker to publish.

10. How did computer and ICT help improve the decision making, business processes and everyday
living in offices and community? (5pts.)

 According to (oitcinterfor.org, business2community.com & indiatoday.in) ICT allows

your business to store, process, analyze and share vast amounts of data. This allows the
managers and employees to make decisions quickly and accurately in order to manage
operations effectively and respond rapidly to business opportunities or threats.
Communication networks also allow decision-makers in different locations to work
together easily when they need to take joint decisions. Other than that, business can
also improve its individual and overall productivity by automating their business
activities or by using ICT. ICT can also be used to offer faster response and higher
standards of service to its customers. It enables the business to fix problems rapidly and
effectively which will definitely contribute to customer satisfaction. In terms of the
environment in the workplace, communication networks help the workers to
collaborate effectively. With the use of videoconferencing, for example, teams can hold
virtual meetings that bring together members from different locations, or different
organizations, such as suppliers or business partners. This helps to create stronger
project teams and enables the teams to maintain progress on important projects, rather
than waiting for members to meet in a single location.
