Learning Plan
Considerations for the Learning Plan: What strategies / activities will I use? How will I
encourage active thinking? What questions will I pose to foster student critical thinking?
Hook Time
Activate 1. Hand out a Public and Private Property Word Sort to the students.
2. Students sort a list of words as either public or private property.
3. Students share completed word sorts with peers and discuss the
characteristics of public and private property they may recognize. 15 mins
4. Have a class discussion about the word sort and the students’ findings.

Acquire 5. Explain the differences of public and private property to students.

6. Students identify examples in fairy tales and stories (e.g., The Three
Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk...) that
illustrate how characters interact with public and private property. Play
the videos and have students tell you “stop” when they identify when
someone is not respecting public or private property.
7. Students can then retell the situation to illustrate how the characters 30 mins
may have acted more positively to demonstrate respect for public and
private property.

8. Using the fairy tales, students create and present scenarios that
illustrate issues related to public and private property (e.g., retrieving a 10 mins
ball from a neighbour’s yard, littering, crossing private property...).
Students discuss how each issue may be resolved in a respectful way.

Closure

school? How can we ensure we are showing respect towards public and private
property when we are at school?
