Chapter 1

Introduction

Rationale of the Study

The New Normal has altered the way we live, particularly the way pupils learn. Students

may complete their hard-copy learning materials or simply go online with the press of a button in

the comfort and safety of their own homes, using the technology that they already own.

Technology has become more prevalent in recent years than it has ever been. According to Globe

Telecom Inc.'s profits for the nine-month period 2020, data-related revenues accounted for 75%

of total service revenues, with mobile data accounting for 49%, residential broadband accounting

for 18%, and corporate data accounting for 8%. Because the usage of devices is so widespread

nowadays, students have found it simple to adjust to the kind of learning they are being exposed

to. A student can receive their learning materials through an in-person distribution procedure,

online submissions/distributions, videos, podcasts, and live stream broadcasts given by the

learning institute and instructors, among other methods.

However, each individual has a unique learning style, whether it is common or not, and

this influences the effectiveness of the knowledge they receive. Most students have grown

accustomed to face-to-face communication over time. Some students find it challenging to

transition from in-person sessions to remote learning, whilst others like the change of pace owing

to their preferences and comfortability in their environment.

According to DepEd statistics, there was a decline of 26.2 million pupils enrolled from

the previous school year in the school year (2019-2020). According to current statistics from the

DepEd, 11 of the 17 regions of the Philippines have reached higher than 100 percent enrolment

rate, suggesting that students who did not join last year are enrolling this year. Nonetheless, with
a 100.3 percent increase in returning students, this school year promises to be considerably more

fruitful.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the academic influence of the new normal on

Tanjay City Science High School pupils in the school year 2021-2022. To comprehend the

limitations and potential of this style of education. This research might help students anticipate

and adjust to changes in order to learn more effectively.

Statement of the Problem

The outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has alerted everyone, and new

protocols must be followed, resulting in students to learn remotely. The purpose of this study is

to determine the impact of the new normal education on the academic performance of Tanjay

City Science High School Senior High Students.

1.What are the effects on the New Normal Education on the Academic Performance of the

Senior High School students on TCSHS SY 2021-2022?

2.What are the experience of students who are receiving online education? How do they perceive

the quality of online education from their experiences?

3.What are factors that have shaped students’ online education experience? How do those factors

contribute to the quality of online education?

Research Real Hypothesis

There are both positive and negative effects of the New Normal Education on the quality

of education and the knowledge gained by the Senior High School Students of Tanjay City
Science High School for the School Year 2021-2022, with the effects leaning towards the

negative side.

Research Null Hypothesis

The New Normal Education brings mainly positive effects to the quality of education and

academic performances of Senior High School students of Tanjay City Science High School for

the Academic Year 2021-2022 having to study at their own pace and in the comfort of their

homes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the new normal education's academic impact on senior high

students of TCSHS, school year 2021- 2022.  The number of respondents will be 60 from the

SHS department(15 students per section).  The other students which do not belong to the SHS

department are not within the scope of this research. The study would be done through surveys

and questionnaires to the students. By this strategy the researchers will be able to know the new

normal education's academic impact, in terms of academic performance, of the SHS students in

TCSHS.

Significance of the Study

This study regarding the new normal education's academic influence on senior high

learners of TCSHS will highlight its importance, benefit, and use to the following:
 Senior High Students. This study will help the students to have a better understanding

with regards to the measures of the influence of the new normal education.

 Teachers. This study will help them to understand what their students' views and

attitudes are towards the current influence of the modern method or system of education,

as well as how to help some students who are struggling with the new system of

education.

 Parents. The results of this study will assist them in understanding the impact that the

new normal education has brought on their children, and it will also allow them to focus

more, provide guidance, and attention on their children.

 School. This study will serve as a guide and basis to further develop the management

within the school. In this way, the school will better understand and expand its

understanding of their students.

 Government. This study will serve as a task instrument to inform the government of the

grievances of the students, and for them to have knowledge of the information gathered

by the researchers. With its help, they can take action on the problems that are needed to

be solved in the field of education.

 The Future Researchers. This study will help them to have a broader perspective and

wisdom, and broaden their mind to the things that should be avoided and should be kept

caused by the new normal education and this can also be of great help if they will

conduct the same study.

Figure 1 displays the link between among three theories: Maslow’s Theory of Human

Motivation, Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, and Jean Piaget’s Theory of Education

that relates to the study on the new normal education’s academic influence on senior high

learners of TCSHS, during S. Y. 2021-2022.

Learning is a process that cannot be copied or recreated, although no two people's

learning processes are the same. Past cognitive, social, and humanistic learning acquired during
one's life can have an influence on these aspects of learning. Most people's direction derives

from the development of talents and the acquisition of new information that may be applied in

future endeavors. Conversely, a person may have ordeals that may cause delays and harm to their

path of thinking.

In terms of the theories on the new normal education’s academic influence on senior high

learners of Tanjay City Senior High School, during S. Y. 2021-2022. Albert Bandura's social

learning theory analyzes how environmental and cognitive factors interact to impact human

learning and behavior. While Maslow's theory of motivation demonstrates the necessity of

having a comfortable work environment to avoid or seek these components for improved

educational quality. It also corresponds to Piaget's cognitive learning theory, which states that

age plays a part in the sort of learning process a person goes through and is determined by their

life experiences.

The episode of the coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has cautioned

everybody, and modern conventions must be taken after, coming about in students to

learn solo and remotely. The reason of this study is to decide the impact of the modern

typical education on the scholarly execution of Tanjay City Science High School Senior

High Students. Thus we made Conceptual Framework about our research (The New
Normal Education's Academic Influence on Senior High Learners of TCSHS) in order to

better understand our situation and how to overcome it.

Review of Related Literature

Education evolves on a daily basis and varies from person to person, from

where they study to how they learn. Education has advanced dramatically in

recent years as a result of technological advancements. As a result, as education

and knowledge grow, so does technology.

The digital age has brought about significant changes in the practice of distance

education. ODeL is characterized by convergence of an open learning philosophy, DE

pedagogies, and e-learning technologies. The paper concludes with a discussion of the

policy development and administrative changes required to support innovative teaching

practice (Arinto, 2016).

The pandemic has pushed us into the concept of remote learning, with

information only accessibly virtually. Knowledge has become something meant to

be exchanged like a product, just as Lyotard predicted in 1984. But it is also

important that technology should be inclusive and accessible to all(Pacheco,

2020).

Covid-19 affected higher educational institutions not just in Wuhan, China

where virus originated. The article recommends educational institutions to

produce studies to document the impact of the pandemic. There is a greater need

for schools to strengthen the practices in the curriculum and make it responsive to

the learning needs of the students(Toquero, 2020).

The author recommends that the opportunity and challenges presented

should be grasped and taken a serious concern. In the Philippines, there are still a
growing COVID-19 infections as of now. There were some posed challenges and

issues arised while recommending several approaches on the new normal (Tria,

2020).

The COVID-19 pandemic had the greatest impact on the quality of the learning

experience and students' mental health. Students' greatest challenge was linked to their

learning environment at home, while their least challenge was technological literacy and

competency. The most frequently used strategies were resource management and

utilization, help-seeking, time management, and learning environment control (Barrot,

Llenares, & del Rosario, 2021).

Research Methodology

This chapter describes the approach that was used in this study. The

following subtopics are covered in this section: (1) research design, (2) flow of

the study, (3) research setting or environment, (4) respondents and sampling

procedure, (5) research instrument, and (6) data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study utilizes a descriptive research design in an effort to describe and scrutinize the

facets that the researchers set forth, namely; the positive and negative repercussions of

the new educational set-up of the SHS students of Tanjay City Science High School and

to deduce if the change of the learning modalities in the new normal education affects the

students' academic performance.

Flow of the Study

The researchers start off by studying the background of the chosen topic as well

as previous studies related to it. The researchers then prepare questions needed for the

data gathering and it will be done through online surveys and questionnaires. The

researchers choose 60 respondents, composed of 15 students per section in the Senior

High School department of TCSHS through random sampling technique. After gathering

the data needed, the researchers analyze the data and determine the influence of the new

normal way of education on the academic performance of the students.

Research Environment

Tanjay City Science High School in Opao, Tanjay City, Negros Oriental,

was the site of the research project. It is believed to be 150 meters from the

national highway and is located in the rear of Tanjay City Division near Tanjay

City South Central School and Tanjay National High School, both of which are

well known as Opao. As of school year 2020-2021 there are approximately 128

senior high school students enrolled. Mrs. Nancy C. Colina, the current principal,

leads a team of 20 dedicated educators that work tirelessly to meet the educational

requirements of their students. In the current year, two buildings are arranged for

the Senior High Department have been constructed, and the school continues to

produce pupils capable of achieving great academic results in college, as well as

some graduates with Latin Awards.

Location Map
Research Respondents

For our research respondents we selected only some of the students of

Tanjay City Science Highschool, preferably the senior highschool students. The

proponent came up with having 15 respondents in each section in the senior high

school department since we only have 2 sections per grade level, resulting in 30

respondents per grade level, total is 60 respondents in the senior highschool

department.
Research Instruments

This research study will make use of online questionnaires and self-made

surveys by the researchers. It will be distributed to 60 Senior High School

students at Tanjay City Science High School. The questionnaires will include 5-

10 questions to be answered by the respondents by checking. The instrument that

the researchers will use will be of great help as a way to obtain data that will

support this research or study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers communicated with the target respondents and described

what the research project entailed. After the explanation, the study's subjects were

handed online survey questions. The questions were then collected, organized,

evaluated, and interpreted.
