EFFECTS OF COVID-19: A COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

According to the World Health Organization, communicable diseases can cause epidemics and
pandemics which have the potential to overwhelm the capacity of communities; with serious health and
socioeconomic consequences (WHO, 2017).
Our country, Philippines, has seen many outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases. It continues to be
susceptible to the danger of re-emerging infections such as foot-and-mouth diseases, chickenpox, influenza,
measles, acute conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, tuberculosis, STDs, HIV, and the latest, COVID-19 among others.
Our present situation emphasizes the risks as well as features the need to improve preparedness at local, national
and international levels against pandemics such as COVID-19.
The Corona Virus Disease or COVID-19 has caused a large number of fatalities (deaths), morbidities
(infections), and economic losses to its infected countries worldwide.
It is apparent how the global economy has severely demobilized due to COVID-19. To restrict the
transmission of the disease, many of the infected countries have decided to undergo temporary or complete
lockdown which led to the following:
1. Major international flights and business transports are deferred among different countries;
2. Educational, commercial, sports and spiritual institutions are closed;
3. Industries are suffering a lot (non-essential manufacturing companies, factories, establishments,
tourism and transportation industry); and
4. There is a threat of high inflation and increasing unemployment as a result of lack of productivity and
excessive expenditure for the treatment and rehabilitation of the COVID-19 victims and their families.

On the other hand, due to non-functioning of industries, ban on transportation, and restrictions on
people’s movements, some positive impacts on the environment are observed:
1. Industrial waste emission has decreased to a large extent;
2. There is almost zero emission of green-house gases and toxic tiny particles to the environment;
3. Use of fossil fuels or conventional energy sources have been lowered significantly;
4. Ecosystems are being greatly recovered; and
5. The pollution level in tourist spots such as forests, sea beaches, hill areas etc. is also decreasing
largely.

The COVID-19 pandemic has displayed its contrasting results on human civilization, in the sense that,
on one hand it has effected worldwide destruction but created a very positive impact on the world environment
on the other hand.
