Parts of a Whole of an Emerging Pattern

According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary, part is one of the often-
indefinite subdivisions into which something is regarded as divided and
which together constitute the whole. On the other hand, whole means
something constituting a complex unity: a coherent system or organization
of parts or working together as whole. It shows the totality of the pieces and
segments that somehow, we consider as parts. We can identify that
something is part of a whole if we know what all is that something about.

Conversely, fads are normally micro-trends that exist under the

umbrella of an actual trend. These are parts of the evolution of creating a
whole trend. However, trends are a bit slower paced but represent something
that is occurring on a much wider scale than a fad.

The entirety is understood by their component consciousness. The

parts, as products of the total division, can only be understood through
understanding of the whole.

Classification of Trends
• Megatrends- A trend that is expected to persist over a long period of
time, have a profound impact on global society, and is visible and well
known to everyone. They have an influence on all the aspects of life. These
events mostly occur as a reaction to the behavior and activities done by
people in the last century but also more recently. Examples of these trends
are demographic changes, urbanization, climate change, and advance in
technology. This kind of tendencies cannot be stopped or influenced easily.

• Macrotrends- Something that has a significant impact on society

over a five to ten-year period and is known and understood by most people.
Social media is an example of a macrotrend.

• Microtrends- An emerging trend that has been around for 3-5 years

and that currently is mostly impacting early adopters. Adaptive learning
could be considered a microtrend.

• Fads-opposite of trends. They only keep for a short period of time

Emergence

Is defined in simple ways but is consistent on its context. It means

just beginning to exist, starting to exist and growing and developing,
especially in business.

Pattern

Is a series of data that repeats in a recognizable way. In business

dictionary, pattern is a consistent and recurring characteristic or trait that
helps in the identification of a phenomenon or problem, and serves as an
indicator or model for predicting its future behavior. It can occur within a
downward or upward trend, or they can mark the beginning of a new trend.

Emerging Patterns

Are sets of items whose frequency changes significantly from one

dataset to another. They are useful as a means of discovering distinctions
inherently present amongst a collection dataset and have been shown to be a
powerful method for construction accurate classifiers.

Emergence of Trends
How do we recognize that a trend is starting to emerge? The capacity
to identify emerging trends is rooted in our capacity to recognize patterns.
Our encounter with patterns was facilitated by experience and processed by
the mind through abstraction and generalization.

According to Philosopher John Locke, there are no innate ideas. All of

the ideas that we have are derived from experience and that every complex
idea we have in our minds can be traced back to a simple idea. It means that
experience is comprised of sensation and reflection. Locke points out that all
active mental process such as analyzing, criticizing, evaluating, and judging
form part of the reflection of experience.

Stages of an Emerging Pattern

According to Duin and Pekalska (2007), pattern recognition is
characterized by three stages, namely. representation, generalization and
evaluation. Adaptation, which serves as an intermediary stage is also
involved in the process.

1. Representation – real world objects have to be represented in a formal

way in order to be examined and associated. Representation is an essential
aspect of pattern recognition and is different from classification. It largely
influences the success of the stages to come.

3
2. Adaptation is an intermediate stage between representation and
generalization, in which representations, learning methodology or problem
statement are adapted or extended in order to enhance the final recognition.
It may reduce or simplify the representation, or it may enrich it by
emphasizing particular aspects. Exploratory data analysis may be used to
guide the choices of suitable learning strategies.

3. Generalization or Inference – in this stage we learn a concept from a

training set, the set of known and appropriately represented examples, in
such a way that prediction can be made in some unknown properties of new
examples. The most common property is the class of pattern it belongs to,
which is the above mention classification task.

4. Evaluation – in this stage we estimate how our (pattern recognition

process) performs on known training and validation data. If the results are
unsatisfactory, then the previous steps have to be considered.

Types of Data Emerging Pattern

A. Trend
1. Linear Trend is a continuous decrease or increase in numbers over time.
a. Upward Trend is the increase in the quantity or price.

b. Downward Trend is the decrease in the quantity or price.

2. Exponential Trend are non-linear curved lines where the data rises or
falls not at a steady rate, but at a higher rate. Thus, instead of a straight line
pointing diagonally up, the graph will show a curved line where the last
point in later years is higher than the first year, if the trend is up.

3. Damped Trend - is a curved line that shows data values rise or fall
initially, and then suddenly stops rising or falling.

B. Seasonal – it is when fluctuations repeat over fixed periods of time and

are hence predictable and do not extend beyond a year.

Seasonality may be caused by various factors, such as weather, vacation,

and holidays and usually consists of periodic, repetitive, and generally
regular and predictable patterns

5

C. Cyclical – is when fluctuations do not repeat over fixed periods of time

and are hence unpredictable and extend beyond a year.

In a recession, for example, employment, production and many other

business and economic series are below the long-term trend lines.
Conversely, in periods of rise they are above their long-term trend lines.

D. Random or Irregular or Error - are fluctuations in time series that are

short induration, erratic in nature and follow no regularity in the occurrence
pattern.

In prediction, the objective is to “model” all the components to some

trend patterns to the point that the only component that remains
unexplained is the random component.

Causes and Consequences of a Trend

Merriam Webster defines cause as a reason for an action or condition,
and or something that brings about an effect or a result. In the contrary,
consequence means something that is produced by a cause or necessarily
following from a set of condition. It is a result or conclusion.

It appears, that many of the things that we experienced in the world

are characterized by the cause and effect. This is also crucial for us in
identifying patterns. Interestingly, cause and effect can be useful in
recognizing patterns. Example, change in oil prices can cause changes in the
price of commodities as their consequences. From this, we can say that the
pattern or trend is: high oil prices = high prices of commodities whereas low
oil prices = low prices of commodities. This relationship between cause and
consequences and the emergence of trend or pattern have proven to be very
useful to us in many occasions.
