What is this module all about?


This module will help you raise awareness of who you are as a human-being with the goal of

Day 1: Knowing Oneself


Knowing yourself is not about skimming the surface like finding a favorite color or music you like.
Knowing yourself is about delving much deeper, and it is a journey. It is about discovering who you are as a
human being—the real you.

Concept Notes:

 One has to understand his/her own emotions, desires, and abilities as a person.
 Knowing who you are and what you stand for in life can help to give you a strong sense of self-
confidence.
 Knowing yourself means respecting your strengths and weaknesses, your passions and fears, and
your desires and dreams.
 Personal development consists of activities that develop a person’s capabilities and potential,
build human capital, facilitate employability, and enhance the quality of life and the realization of
dreams and aspirations.
 Self-improvement and personal growth allow you to develop the skills and discipline to make you
a better person.

 Erick Erickson (1902-1994) expanded Freud’s Theory that recognizes the importance of early
experiences in childhood. According to him, socialization process is important. His theory
extended the stages of development throughout the life span. In here, each stage is characterized
by psychosocial conflict or crisis that an individual needs to overcome enabling him to
successfully move to the next stage.

Stage 1 Birth to 1 year- Trust vs Mistrust

Stage 2: 2 to 3 years -Autonomy vs Shame & Doubt

Stage 3: 3 to 5 years -Initiative vs Guilt

Stage 4: 6 to 11 years -Industry vs Inferiority

Stage 5: 12 to 18 years (Adolescence) -Identity vs Identity Confusion

Stage 6: 19-40 years (Early Adulthood)- Intimacy vs Isolation

Stage 7: 40 to 65 years (Middle Adulthood) -Generativity vs Stagnation

Stage 8: 65 years and up (Late Adulthood)- Integrity vs Despair

 Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is a popular psychologist whose theory of human development and
personality sparked great interest due to its biological orientation that focuses on psychosexual
development of an individual.

 Jean Piaget (1896-1980) He believes that an individual grows through a dynamic process in
which the body’s internal system interacts with the environment that one needs to strike a
balance, a state called equilibrium.

 Lawrence Kohlberg (1927-1987) He recognized the role of cognitive ability in developing moral
reasoning of children. He believed that there are three levels of morality with two stages in each
level.
