Scientific and Medical Traditions in India and the World
(From Early Medieval Times to the Eighteenth Century)

SECTION-A (30 Marks)


Answer any THREE (3 x 10 = 30)

1. Critically analyse the pre-modern background of ‘modern science’.


2. Describe the various scholarly traditions in pre-colonial South Asia.
3. Discuss the development of astronomy as a distinct discipline in South Asia.
4. Evaluate the contributions of Perso-Arabic scholars in the field of ‘scientific studies’.
5. Discuss the socio-religious dimensions of the medical profession in early medieval
India.
6. Discuss the factors that hindered the development of ‘modern science’ in South Asia.

SECTION-B (10 Marks)


Answer any TWO (2 x 5 = 10)

7. Write a note on ‘science and pseudo-science’.


8. Describe the difference between science and religion.
9. Describe the salient feature of the ‘scientific method’.
10. Write a note on the ‘sociological studies’ of science.

Instructions and Notes:

1. Kindly send an email if you have any queries during the exam.
2. Send your handwritten answer-scripts in scanned or pdf format within the specified time to the

3. Time: 10 am to 12 pm (15 mins for downloading the question paper before exam and 30 mins for
submission of answer scripts after exam)

4. Twenty (20) minutes of extra time for each hour of examination beyond the normal time will be
given to the differentially-abled students.

4. The schedule of the time-bound examination clearly indicated that only 30 minutes will be given
for uploading the answer-scripts. In accordance with the official guidelines, the department will not
accept any submission after 30 minutes for the forthcoming examination.
