Yr 5/6 Gymnastics Lesson 1 KS2

Learning Intention: To Perform a Variety of Jumps and Leaps EQUIPMENT:


Year 5 Resource cards,
I can perform a jump and a leap with some control and body tension
benches, mats,
I can perform jumps and leaps with control and body tension
box tops,
I can perform jumps and leaps with control, body tension and pointed toes
springboard.
Year 6
I can perform a jump and a leap with control and body tension
I can perform jumps and leaps with control, body tension and pointed toes
I can perform jumps and leaps with control, body tension, fluency and pointed toes
Note: If this is the first time you have used The Future Games gymnastic lesson plans we recommend you
to complete lessons 1– 6 from Year 3/4. This will ensure children know all the fundamental shapes,
balances and jumps.
Warm up: Gymnasts
Children to find a space and listen to the teacher’s instructions. Children now pretend they are moving
around like gymnasts, e.g. skipping, leaping and jumping with pointed toes.

If teacher calls “Rocket Jump” children perform what they think a Rocket Jump is.
Progress
If teacher calls “Star Jump” children perform what they think a Star Jump is.
If teacher calls “Tuck Jump” children perform what they think a Tuck Jump is. check of jumps
If teacher calls “Pike Jump” children perform what they think a Pike Jump is.
If teacher calls “Straddle Jump” children perform what they think a Straddle Jump is.

Freeze = Children to show a stretch they know.

SHAPES
Starter Activity: In pairs children to teach each other a shape: Rocket shape, Star shape,
Straddle, Tuck, Dish shape, Saucer, Squat shape , Pike shape, Front Support, Back Support
and Japana. Progress check.
If children do not know shapes see resource card to learn them. You can give the children resource cards
to teach each other the shapes.

Activity 1: Jumps Tuck Jump Star Jump Rocket Jump

1. Teacher to recap jumps: Rocket, Star and Tuck.

2. Progression is to now teach a Pike Jump and


Straddle Jump. See video/resource cards.

Yr 6: To have a very quick recap of jumps.


Children can demonstrate
their jumps to the class Pike Jump
or another group. (AFL)

Straddle Jump
Teaching Point:
Land on two feet with bent knees.
Encourage pointed toes.

Activity 2: Rocket Jump with Turn, Scissor Kick, Cat Leap

YEAR 5:
1. Teacher to recap Rocket Jump with a turn (¼, ½ and full turn).

2. Teach Scissor Kick – see resource card.

3. Teach Cat Leap – see resource card.

4. Children to practise in pairs using the resource cards


to help coach each other – peer assessment.

5. Children to demonstrate their jumps. Class/group ¼, ½, full turn


to feed back on their performance – Progress check. in the air.
YEAR 6 : A quick recap of Scissor Kick and Cat Leap

Activity 3: Jump sequence using equipment Key words:


Sequence, Start, Middle, Finish,
control, fluency and body tension.
Year 5’s: Children to work in groups of four (2 mats per group)

1. Children to make up a sequence. Children to select three different Jumps and two Shapes.
Can they use a Leap to link their sequence together?

Year 6’s: Group to choose their own equipment e.g. mats, bench , box tops or springboard .
Children to select three different Jumps . Children to use one Leap to link their sequence
together? What other linking moves can they use to link their sequence together?

2. Children to perform to another group or the rest of the class – children observing to give feedback on
the sequence. Teacher to Q & A key points of jumps and sequence (see key words).

More able: To add complex jumps to their sequence: e.g. Pike and Straddle Jump. Can they use different
leaps to link their sequence together?

Cool Down: Children to work in pairs and show some of their own
stretches.
Plenary: Ask the children which jumps they liked performing best.
They can tell a partner what they thought was important
when performing a Scissor Kick and a Cat Leap.
Why are these Leaps good to use in a sequence?
