vi
What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind.
It is here to help you learn the Art and Computer. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in
which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you
are now using.

The module consists of only one lesson:

• Art and the Computer

After going through this lesson, you are expected to:
➢ Discuss the concept that art processes, elements and principles still
apply even with the use of new technologies.

What I Know

Directions: Write T if the statement is true and F if it is false. Write the

chosen answer on a separate sheet of paper.

2. ___ Shapes can be actual, tactile or visual.
3. ___ The elements of art are applied in all art.
4. ___ Lines convey specific expressions that help the artist convey his
or her message in the artwork.

Answer the question before you
proceed.

2
What’s New

• Did you ever think you could create art with new technologies?
• What kinds of artwork can be done with the computer and
tools were used to make them?
• Did you know that arts processes, elements and principles are
still applied even with the use of new technologies?

What is it

Nowadays new digital equipment was innovated like computer,

laptop, tablet and more are not just for playing video games, or surfing the
internet. Today artists use the computer to make wonderful artworks. Arts
is no longer done only on paper using paint and other coloring materials.
The new form of art created using the computer is called digital art.
Digital art - introduces new and varied ways of looking at things.
It is also considered real art because the same artistic thinking and skills
are applied by the artist. Instead of paper and pencil, digital artists use a
digital pen and tablet.
See illustrations

Look at the pictures above. It shows that artist using a digital pen and
tablet to create digital art.
In making digital art, the elements and principles are still applied.
Try to think back at old artworks done by hand and paper using pencil
and coloring materials. How different do you think would they turn out if
you did them using new technologies.
➢ What type of art can you create using the computer?

3
Answer:
Digital art- Many artists began to explore the emerging computing
technology for use as a creative tool. Adobe system founded in 1982,
develop the post Script language and digital fonts, making drawing,
painting, and image manipulation software popular.
• Computer generated visual media- use for graphic design
• 2D art- this is emulating traditional art using computer software
• 3D Graphic/3D Art (Still and Animated)- created via process of
designing imagery from geometric shapes, polygons, curves to create
three-dimensional objects and scenes for use in various media such
as film, television, print, rapid prototyping, games/simulations, and
special visual effects.
Examples:

3D art 2D art

Artists use drawing software in the computer wherein they can use the;

BASIC DRAWING TOOLS

• Pencil tool -the tool that draws free lines onto the picture.
• Line tool – used to create perfectly straight lines.
• Paint Bucket- used to fill an area with a solid color or pattern.
• Square tool- used to create perfect square or rectangular shapes.
• Circle tool- used to create perfect circles and the thickness can be
changes using the line tool.

SELECTION AND ERASING TOOLS

• Erasing tool- provides several different ways to erase various parts

or all of your drawing.
• Moving Truck- allows various parts of the image to be selected and
move around the canvas.
• Dye tool- used to pick out colors already used somewhere in the
canvas.

4
TEXT INSERTION

• Text tool- includes “rubber stamps” of the letters of the alphabet.

• Typing Tool- includes basic abilities to add text to the image in
different fonts and various sizes.
• Opacity- reduce the passage of light.
• Undo- cancels annuls or reverses an action or its effect.

Look at the illustrations below:

Illustration (Art using drawing software in Microsoft word in the computer/laptop.

Example of Digital art

As you can see in the illustration, both elements and principles of

art of arts like lines, shapes, colors, contrast and emphasis are present. It
looks the same when you basically draw in a traditional way using your
hand, as long as the arts processes are still there.
Elements of art:

1. Line- path of moving point made by a tool, instrument or medium

as it moves across an area.it can be straight, curve, thick or thin.
The type of line artist use shows built-in association and subtle
psychological suggestions.
Example:

Horizontal line-mean relaxation, lying or making the subject appear wide.

Vertical line- can mean rigid, straight, stable or making the subject
appear tall.
Curve line- can show smooth flow, waves or movement.
Zigzag lines- can convey stress, tension or instability.

2. Shape- two-dimensional figure enclosed by a line. There are two

types of shapes.
Geometric shape- are man-made such as circle, square, rectangle, oblong
and triangle.
5
Organic shape- are found in nature like shape of flowers and leaves.

3. Color- it adds life to anything, may they be objects environments, or

even people.

Principles of art:

1. Contrast- created using complementary colors or extremely light

and dark values. It is used to make drawing more visually interesting
and creates an interest in a piece.
2. Emphasis- make part of the work stand out.

What’s More

Practice:
Using the magic Slate program, draw a piece using elements and
principles of arts.
You can use other devices such as tablet or laptop with a drawing software
to make this exercise. Print your work.

What I Have Learned

• What are the elements and principles of arts used in making digital
art?
• Why is the artist used innovative equipment like computer to do the
art?
• How innovative equipment like computer being used?

6
Remember:
Colors, shapes, lines, emphasis and contrast are always present
in making art.
Line is a path of moving point made by a tool, instrument or
medium as it moves across an area.it can be straight, curve,
thick or thin.
Shape is a two-dimensional figure enclosed by a line.
Color adds life to anything, may they be objects environments,
or even people.
Contrast is created using complementary colors or extremely
light and dark values.
Emphasis make part of the work stand out.

What I Can Do

Activity:
Steps to follow:
1. Make an artwork using computer software. You can use the work
you did in practice and improve it.
2. Save your artwork as a picture file (. jpg, gif) and print it.
3. Make sure you give your work a title and mention the program that
you used in making it. (example: Landscape, using drawing
software)
