Climate change gk

1.Earths average temp - 15 c

2. Scientists say temp are now rising faster than at many other times.
3. This is linked to greenhouse effect.
4. Greenhouse effect – describes how the earth’s atmosphere traps
some of the sun’s energy.
5. This heats the lower atmosphere and surface of the planet.
6. Solar energy radiating back to the space from the earth’s surface is
absorbed by the green house and gases are remitted in all directions.
7. Scientist believe that we are adding to the natural greenhouse
effect, with gases released from industry and agriculture trapping more
energy and increasing the temp.
8. This is known as climate change or global warming.

What are greenhouse gases?

1. The CHG with the greatest impact on warming is WATER
VAPOUR. But it remains in the atmosphere for only a few days.
2. CO2- persist for much longer. It would take 100 years for a return
to pre-industrial level and only so much can be soaked by natural
reservoirs such as the ocean.
3. CO2 comes from burning fossil fuel. When carbon absorbing
forests are cut down and left to rot or burned that stored carbon is
released contributing to global warming.
4. Since the industrial revolution began in about 1750. CO2 levels
gave been more than 30%
5. Methane and nitrous oxide.

What is the evidence for warming?

1. According to world meteorogical organization (WMO) world is
about 1C warmer than before industrialization.
2. 2015-2019 were the warmest year on record.
3. Average sea level increased by 3.6 mm per year between 2005-15
4. Water increases in volume as it heats up.
5. Most glaciers are melting and melting ice is now thought to be the
main reason for rising sea level.
6. Satellite records show a dramatic decline in arctic sea ice since
1979.

How much will temp rise in future?

1. 1850- end of 21st century – global surface temp is likely to exceed
1.5 C.
2. WMO says that – temperature could rise 3-5C by the end of this
century.

How will climate change affect us?

1. Fresh water shortages – alter our ability to produce food – increase
the number of deaths – because climate change is expected to
increase the frequency of extreme weather events.
2.

3. But the risk of drought in inland areas during hot summer will
increase.
4. Increase in malaria, water borne diseases and malnutrition.
IPCC
1. Inter-govern mental panel on climate change
2. Leading international body for assessment of climate change.
3. It is a key source of scientific information and technical guidance
to the UNFCCC (united nation framework convention on climate
change ), Kyoto protocol, paris agreement.
4. IPCC is an organization of govt that are members of UN (united
nation) pr world meteorological oragnisation (WMO), the IPCC
currently has 195 members.
5. IPCC – plenary is the main body of IPCC members. they elect
bureau of scientist for the duration of an assessment cycle.
6. It was created in 1988 ( WMO and UN environment
programme(UNEP))
7. Assessment reports – on climate (causes, impact and responses)
8. Methodology reports – which provides practical guidance to
parties.
9. Special reports- on topics that inform assessment report
10. IPCC does not undertake new research but synthesis
published in these reports.
11. 6th assessment report- still in preparation stage

Greenhouse gasses sources and causes

1. Gases that are able to absorb heat in the atmosphere keeping the
earth’s surface warm.
CHG Sources and causes
CO2 Burning of fossil fuels
deforestration
Methane Growing paddy
(CH4) Excreta of cattle and other livestock, termites
Buring of fossil fuels.
Landfill
Fertilizer factories
Nitrous oxide Burning of fossil fuel fertilizer
(N2O) Burning of wood and crop residues

Per fluoro Produced as a by-product in aluminium

carbons
(PFC’s)
Sulphur hexa Used as a tracer gas for leak detection
fluoride (SFG)

Hydro fluoro Used as refrigerants

carbons Arrosal propellents
(HCF’s) Fire retardants

Amur falcon-
1. With the arrival of the migratory amur falcon in tamenglong
district of Manipur for the annual stopover, the state forest and
environment minister appealed to the people not to hunt the
seasonal visitor.
2. These falcons visit the district every year from china and Russia
before beginning their voyage to Africa for the winter (more than
30,000 km )
3. Feeds on dragon flies
4. IUCN list – least concern
