Gallantary awards

Part1- context
 Presently president of india awarded gallantary
awards to various officers of armed forces.
 The gallantary awards are announced twice a year
first on the occasion of the republic day the on the
occasion of independence day.

Part2 – history of gallantary awards


 Post-independence three gallantary awards
namely paramvir chakra, maga vir chakra, vir
chakra were instituted by the government of india
on jan 26 1950 which were deemed to have effect
from august 15th 1947.
 Thereafter other three gallantary awards-
ashok chakra- class 1
ashok chakra – class 2 (kirti chakra)
ashok chakra- class 3 ( shaurya chakra)
were instituted in 1952 which were deemed to have
effect from 15th august 1947.

Part3- peolle eligible for the awards.


 All officers if the ranks of army, navy and the air
forces, territorial army or any other lawfully
constituted armed forces.
 Sisters, nurses staff of the nursing services other
services pertaining to hospitals.
Part4 – wartime highest gallantary award
 Param vir chakra- it is india’s highest military
decoration awarded for displaying distinguished
acts of valour during wartime whether on land at
sea or in the air.
 Maha vir chakra- second highest gallantary award.
 Vir chakra- third highest gallantary award.

Part5- peace time highest gallantary award


 Ashok chakra- highest military award during peace
time for valour, courageous, action or sacrifice.
Done in the face of enemy
 Kirti chakra- second highest peace time gallantary
award- and is awarded for valour, courageous
action pr self sacrifice away from the field of
battle.
 Surya chakra

Part6- other awards


 Sena medal – it is awarded for acts of exceptional
devotion to duty or courage in the army.
 Nao sena medal- it is awarded for individual acts
of exceptional devotion to duty or courage in the
navy
 Vayu sena medal – air force
