II. LESSON DISCUSSION

Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Painting
C in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guóhuà meaning 'national' or 'native
H painting', as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th
century. Chinese painting is closely related to calligraphy. The same soft brush is used

in doing both art forms. Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting.
N Chinese painting was usually done in silk, scrolls with the theme about flowers, animals,
A birds and other natural form. They sometimes include calligraphy to supplement the
drawing or painting.

Japanese art covers a wide range of art styles and media, including ancient pottery, J
sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy on silk and paper, ukiyo-e paintings and A
woodblock prints, ceramics, origami, and more recently manga which is
modern Japanese cartoons and comics along with a myriad of other types. P
Suiboku-ga, also called Sumi-e, Japanese monochrome ink painting. A
Ukiyo-e refers to a style of Japanese woodblock print and painting from the Edo period
depicting famous theater actors, beautiful courtesans, city life, travel in romantic

landscapes, and erotic scenes.

Minhwa refers to Korean folk art produced mostly by itinerant or unknown artists
K without formal training, emulating contemporary trends in fine art for the purpose
O of everyday use or decoration. The term "minhwa" was coined by
R Yanagi Muneyoshi. Minhwa literally means "painting of the people"
or "popular painting". The tiger is also the most frequently depicted
