Introduction
The amount of entrepreneurship that can be found per square feet in Unorganized retail sector
in India is exponentially higher than the organized sector. For the bulk of India's 1.3 billion
people, the unorganized retail industry is the most prevalent and popular way of selling and
purchasing. It is the base or foundation stone of India's retail business, and it is a firmly
established and fiercely held market mechanism that has ruled the country's retail industry for
more than a century. Narrow-scale retail stores with little or no standardization, selling goods
and services to local clients within a small geographical area or locality, make up the
unorganized retail sector. Technology is rarely used, and procedures are rarely followed. The
traditional Kirna stores and the people who run them, don’t possess a fancy MBA degree,
they don’t keep management consultants on retainer, SAP, CRM, ERP don’t make it to their
vocabulary and yet they run their business efficiently. The neighborhood Kirina stores are
the backbone of Indian retail because a large no of demography stays in rural areas where
access to hypermarkets and supermarkets is out of question and thus plays a pivotal role.

This study will try to understand how these kirana stores manage their inventories, their
traditional methodologies employed by them and how efficient they are in context of their
business. and ways to improve their inventory management without or minimal cost.
