Vocabulary List

Chapter 1
Mean –  to have something as a meaning in the same or another language
Clerk- a person whose job is to serve customers in a shop
Humbug – dishonest language or behaviour that is intended to trick people

Chapter 2
Ill-used – badly treated; badly used

Chapter 3
Hearse – a long vehicle used for carrying the coffin (= the box for the dead body) at a funeral
Chain – a series of connected metal rings, used for pulling or fastening things; a length of chain used
for a particular purpose

Chapter 4
Holly – a bush or small tree with hard shiny leaves with sharp points and bright red berries in winter,
often used as a decoration at Christmas

Chapter 5
Warehouse – a building where large quantities of goods are stored, especially before they are sent
to shops to be sold
Fiddler – a person who plays the violin, especially to play folk music
Miserable – very unhappy or uncomfortable

Chapter 6
Mistletoe – a plant with small shiny white berries that grows on other trees and is often used as a
decoration at Christmas
Jolly – happy and cheerful
Bare – not covered by any clothes

Chapter 7
Goose – a bird like a large duck with a long neck. Geese either live wild or are kept on farms.

Chapter 8
Lighthouse – a tower or other building that contains a strong light to warn and guide ships near the
coast
Bad temper – ften angry; in an angry mood

Chapter 10
Nasty – very bad or unpleasant
Undertaker – a person whose job is to prepare the bodies of dead people to be buried or cremated,
and to arrange funerals

Chapter 11
Hard-hearted – giving no importance to the feelings or problems of other people
Fearful – nervous and afraid
Graveyard – an area of land, often near a church, where people are buried
Weeds – a wild plant growing where it is not wanted, especially among crops or garden plants
Chapter 12
Bedpost - one of the four supports at the corners of a bed (especially an old type of bed with a
wooden or metal frame)
