The main functions of a kitchen are to store, prepare and cook food and to complete related
tasks such as dishwashing.

2. Describe the sequence of work involved in preparing food.


Separation. The immediate need for preparing food is the separation of edible from inedible
parts, detoxification. Some foods have to be made safe to eat, making edible and digestible,
distribution, storage and composition.

3. Name the 3 layouts in the kitchen and state why a layout should be well planned.
❖ U-Shape and Island Layout – “The Social Kitchen Layout” - With the addition of an
island to a U-shaped layout, you can increase both your kitchen’s functionality and
interactivity, making it a great kitchen solution.

moisture is lingering in your home. Without a ventilation system in place, you have no
control of the air flow in a building.
