1. Introduction

Sustainability has gained tremendous importance for the environment and social

development. The concept of sustainability has many facets, from the environmental impact to

the social equity aspect. Store network the board is the most common way of arranging,

coordinating, and controlling logistics and the flow of goods and materials to maintain and

increase revenue and reduce costs. Sustainability is a multidisciplinary approach that focuses on

the social, ecological, and financial parts of a company's exercises. The term maintainability

denotes a goal of doing nothing to degrade the long-term quality of the environment (Biotto, De

Toni & Nonino, 2020, Pg. 3, Par. 2). Sustainability in-store network the board can be connected

with the monetary, environmental, and social aspects of a firm's business activities.

Elli Coffee Company (ECC) has a solid spotlight on friendly and ecological

maintainability. ECC has a solid spotlight on friendly and ecological manageability (Rivera et

al., 2020, Pg. 104, Par. 4). The company has been involved in various activities around the globe

to ensure that its products and processes are environmentally and socially sustainable. The

company’s product is made from organic and fair trade coffees, which is important to the

company as it is a major player in the sustainable coffees and teas market. Sustainability supply

chain management practices can create a sustainable coffee business (Hong, Zhang & Ding,

2018, Pg. 3508, Par. 2). This paper will examine the sustainability supply chain management

practices of Elli coffee. It will examine the ways that Elli coffee uses sustainable practices to

manage its business.

2. Theoretical background

There are a few theories on how to define supply chain management, but the most

important is that it is a system of processes that links the company's products, activities, and
Supply Chain 3

resources to the firm's consumers (Çankaya & Sezen, 2019, Pg. 32, Par. 4). It includes planning,

coordinating, purchasing, manufacturing, delivering, and distributing their product and services.

A green supply chain involves the use of renewable and environmentally conscious resources,

such as water and energy, while promoting environmentally conscious business practices. The

sustainability of the source chain can be measured by the extent to which the company uses

incomes in a sustainable manner, such as by reducing energy consumption during manufacturing

processes, and by the extent to which it promotes socially responsible business practices to its

consumers (Pullman et al., 2018, Pg. 4, Par. 2). In this case, the sustainable development of the

whole supply chain is the core mission of the Eli Coffee Business. The company has been

committed to the sustainable development of coffee manufacturing and its whole supply chain,

and by applying sustainable practices has been able to transform coffee production and

consumption.

The environmental impact of our production processes can be reduced by managing the

sources of dynamism and resources used in the manufacturing procedure. The sustainability of

coffee production can therefore be improved by making choices regarding the usage of regular

materials, reducing the use of water, the use of chemicals, or the use of energy. The sustainability

of the quantity chain, thus, includes the sustainability of the coffee itself as well as the process of

distributing the coffee.

Green/responsible supply chain supervision is the use of supply chain administration

principles and practices to reduce the impact on the environment and/or improve the overall

well-being of people and society (Rotta et al., 2021, Pg. 105, Par. 3). Supply chain managing is

the practice of preparing, organizing, controlling, and integrating the actions of suppliers and
Supply Chain 4

buyers to realize sustainable results. Supply sequence organization is a part of maintainable

source series administration. It is a vital and powerful tool in the quest to save our planet.

Green supply chain organization is a philosophy of commercial and administration, which

is based on a set of practices that encourages and supports the acceptance of environmentally

sustainable supply chain, rehearses (Tseng et al., 2019, Pg. 146, Par. 2). A green supply chain

aims to decrease or remove the negative influences of trade and source chain activities on the

environment and natural resources (Gerard, Lopez & McCright, 2019, Pg. 5437, Par. 2). Green

supply chain management practices include using resources and energy efficiently; conserving

natural resources; and increasing the market value of goods by offering them environmentally

friendly products.

3. Analysis of the company’s supply chain

Supply Chain Management includes the incorporation and coordination of the activities of

the individuals and organizations involved in the production, distribution, and sale of the goods

or services being produced (Gava et al., 2018, Pg. 130, Par. 3). It enables companies to maximize

efficiency in the use of resources and to achieve the required level of quality and price. SCM is

one of the core concepts of the concept of sustainability in supply chain administration.

According to the European Commission, a green supply chain organization encompasses the

three areas of energy, environment, and resources.

The Eli’s Coffee Company is a major coffee retailer in the U.S. In current ages, the

company has undergone a series of mergers and acquisitions which have significantly enhanced

its capacity and capability to conduct business in the coffee market in the U.S (Cousins et al.,

2018, Pg. 43, Par. 3). Currently, the company is composed of eight retail stores, one roasting

facility, two wholesale outlets (distribution and international), one corporate office, and one
Supply Chain 5

research and development facility. The company has also acquired a company in Brazil called

Grupo de Café Ponto in 2011.

The main components of Eli’s Coffee Supply chain are raw materials, processing,

transport, and marketing. The goal of the supply chain is to certify that the supply is consistent

and of good quality. To advance the supply series management practices, the Eli’s Coffee

Company has adopted several strategies such as (i) the use of a pre-paid shipping service for all

its international orders (Zaid, Jaaron & Bon, 2018, Pg. 965, Par, 3). This allows the company to

have a more flexible and dynamic system for the transport of the coffee from the roaster to the

retailer. (ii) Eli’s Coffee uses the purchase of coffee from farmer co-ops as a means to promote

sustainable rural development and coffee production. This is evidenced by the company’s

support of the coffee co-op system in the country of Guatemala. The company has recently

started coffee production in the country through a joint venture with a local farmer's cooperative.

Eli’s Coffee has also signed a strategic partnership to create a chain of retail shops and a café in

Guatemala.

The company is currently experimenting with a new coffee processing technology that

allows a new type of coffee to be produced on a commercial scale. Eli’s Coffee has also

implemented a new supply strategy and implemented the customer relationship management

system in all locations they reach. As a result of these changes, the company has managed to

increase its market share, expand its customer base, and enhance the supply chain infrastructure.

In addition, the company has reduced its food waste by 30% by using a zero food waste system

(McCarthy et al., 2020, Pg. 10089, Par. 2). The company has also implemented a zero-waste

initiative that helps minimize the amount of food waste. The company has also reduced its

carbon footprint by 90% since 2011 by using solar electricity sources to power its roasting
Supply Chain 6

facility (Golicic & Smith, 2013, Pg. 79, Par. 2). To enhance the safety and security of its supply

chain, the company has invested in high-tech security cameras and sophisticated scanning

devices and systems.

4. Material environmental and social issues

The natural and social issues which structure the goals and system of Eli Coffee Company

corresponding to their stockpile chain(s) are analyzed and evaluated (Demartini & Taticchi,

2021, Pg. 5, Par. 1). It could be identified that they have used a multi-stage supply chain

approach to ensure continuity of supply and reduce the environmental impact of their supply

chain. Except for the first stage where the environmental and social issues were identified, the

company is making an effort to improve the environmental and social issues of each stage of

their supply chain.

The lack of a maintainable supply chain in the production of coffee is a significant issue.

This part will evaluate the impact of Elli Coffee’s production on environmental, social, and

ethical issues to create a strategy to improve production and supply chain management, while

also considering the influence of the company’s maintainable exercises on the communities

where their coffee is sourced (Mangla et al., 2018, Pg. 379, Par. 2). Eli coffee's supply chain

practices are in line with its sustainability strategy and initiatives, but the company has

succeeded in integrating environmental and social factors into the business; this can be proffed

by the fact that they’ve won sustainability awards 9 years in a row and have a socially conscious

supply chain.

Eli’s strategic objective is to be the leading coffee producer and importer in the Asia

Pacific region (Perrini & Russo, 2019, Pg. 363, Par. 3). To achieve this company has chosen to

execute an inventory network management framework to diminish the effect of its exercises on
Supply Chain 7

the climate and society and to meet consumer and trade standards. However, environmental and

social sustainability is a growing concern for the coffee industry. The importance of sustainable

coffee has recently found recognition in the international marketplace, particularly in the

European Union. The EU has set in place several requirements for the coffee sector, including a

minimum 10% share of certified sustainable coffee by 2015 for individual countries (Bager &

Lambin, 2020, Pg. 3555, Par. 2). The EU has also recognized that the sustainable development of

coffee cannot be achieved solely by individual companies but requires the collaboration and

participation of all actors in the coffee supply chain.

5. Evaluation of scope and effectiveness of managerial practices

Eli Coffee is an innovative company that produces 100% Fairtrade, organic Fairtrade, and

ethically sourced coffees. The company is committed to social justice and sustainability. The

company employs over 40,000 people in 28 countries (Thomé et al., 2021, Pg. 124, Par. 3). This

paper is about evaluating the extension and adequacy of the board practices of Eli Coffee

Company comparable to reasonable production network the executives. The organization is

associated with economical store network management practices. Eli coffee has shown a

commitment to the eco-friendly and ethical production of its coffee. Eli has adopted the

principles of the Earth Charter. The company has also adopted a “buy local” policy and has

initiated the establishment of a regional coffee union to bring together local coffee farmers.

Eli Coffee Company is currently looking to implement a wide-ranging source management

initiative. This scheme aims to identify and evaluate a set of sustainable supply chain practices

that will be implemented by the company, to optimize its effectiveness and sustainability.

Production network the executives is the method involved with arranging, planning, and

controlling the flow of material from the raw materials to the final product and the service for the
Supply Chain 8

final customer (Barampouti et al., 2021, Pg. 48, Par. 2). The administration of the supply chain is

the basic concept for Eli coffee company. The result of my analysis is that, although

sustainability practices have been implemented, more can be done to further improve existing

practices to achieve sustainability in the long run. At its simplest level, the supply chain consists

of the people who are managing the raw materials from the suppliers to the manufacturers to the

distributors, and finally to the retailers.

According to Mayson & Williams (2021, Pg. 106, Par. 2) of the Harvard Business

Review, companies should develop and then implement a supply chain management policy.

Sustainability of the market is often a topic that is discussed and many companies have made a

commitment to sustainability. In the case of Elli Coffee, this can be seen in its commitment to

buying from sustainable sources. One way that they can show commitment to sustainability is by

using green-certified coffee, which is coffee that is grown under sustainable practices with a

certificate to verify this. When looking at the company as a whole, however, one can see that the

company’s commitment to sustainability is not being effectively implemented (Govindan et al.,

2014, Pg. 212, Par. 3). The management of Eli Coffee Company provides it with the necessary

resources to ensure and increase the efficiency of its supply chain. However, in doing so, it

cannot ignore the benefits that result from supply chain management.

6. Conclusions

We can all agree that the supply chain is an extremely important aspect of a company's

operations. From the consumer to the company's CEO, it is likely the primary conduit in the

movement of materials and products from raw material to the final product. However, the term

supply chain management is so broadly defined that it could be applied to any business activity.

Even if we are talking about a company's logistics operations, which are the most likely scenario
Supply Chain 9

for a company like Elli Coffee, it is a very broad scope. The results of our research lead us to

believe that the sustainability practices of Elli Coffee are good. This is the result of the fact that

sustainability is something that is in the best interest of the consumer. The Elli coffee company

has implemented effective supply chain administration exercises. The overall success of the

sustainability initiatives of Elli Coffee was determined by the point to which the organization

met its resource chain management objectives. The supply chain management practices of Elli

Coffee guarantee that all the costs for the consumer are considered and calculated very well.

Furthermore, the sustainability practices of Elli Coffee mean that the environment is not affected

by the business.
