Unit Three

Kansas vs. Italy

Cassidy Hayden
The Problem
Sam lives in Italy, one of the many countries

that measure temperature in Celsius. His sister

Conversion Equation Sally lives in Kansas. She calls Sam complaining

F = (9/5)C + 32 of the 102° temperature. After a moment of

panic Sam realizes Sally means 102° Fahrenheit

and not 102° Celsius. Sam wants to know how

hot Kansas is in a unit of measurement he

understands.
Add an Output to the Equation

Sally
The “F” was replaced with
F = (9/5)C + 32 “102” because “F” stands 102° That’s the boiling

Real-World Solution

Kansas, on a hot day is 102°F. For the rest of the world to understand

what that means: it is 38.9°C in Kansas.

Check the Answer

102 = (9/5)38.9 + 32 By replacing C with 38.9 and solving the

equation we can get to 510 = 510.1.
×5 ×5 ×5

510 = 9×38.9 + 160 The answers don’t match up exactly because

38.9 is the rounded temperature in Celsius. The
510 = 350.1 + 160 exact temperature is 38.8889°C.
510 = 510.1
