Warnings, Cautions and Notices

Warnings, Cautions and Notices. Note that warnings, cautions and notices appear at
appropriate intervals throughout this manual. Warnings are provided to alert installing
contractors to potential hazards that could result in personal injury or death, while cautions are
designed to alert personnel to conditions that could result in equipment damage.

Your personal safety and the proper operation of this machine depend upon the strict
observance of these precautions.

ATTENTION: Warnings, Cautions and Notices appear at appropriate sections throughout

this literature. Read these carefully.

WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result
in death or serious injury.

CAUTION: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result
in minor or moderate injury. It could also be used to alert against unsafe practices.

NOTICE: Indicates a situation that could result in equipment or property-damage only

accidents.

WARNING

Ground Required!

Follow proper local electrical code on requirements for grounding. Failure to follow code could
result in death or serious injury.

WARNING

R410A Refrigerant under Higher Pressure than R-22!

The units described in this manual use R-410A refrigerant which operates at 50 to 70% higher
pressures than R-22. Use only R-410A approved service equipment. Refrigerant cylinders are
painted with “pink” color to indicate the type of refrigerant and may contain a “dip” tube to allow
for charging of liquid refrigerant into the system. For specific handling concerns with R-410A,
please contact your local Trane representative.

Failure to use R-410A approved service equipment could result in standard equipment
exploding under R-410A higher pressure which could result in death or serious injury.

2

NOTICE

Use PVE Oil with R-410A Mini-split Units!

All R-410A mini-split units use a PVE oil (Polyvinyl Ether Oil) that readily absorbs moisture from
the atmosphere. To limit this “hygroscopic” action, the system should remain sealed whenever
possible. If a system has been opened to the atmosphere for more than 4 hours, the
compressor oil must be replaced. Never break a vacuum with air and always change the driers
when opening the system for component replacement. For specific handling concerns with PVE
oil, contact your local Trane representative.

Use ONLY THE FACTORY RECOMMENDED – DAFNE HERMETIC OIL FV50S – for servicing
these units.

Failure to follow these recommendations could result in equipment damage.

IMPORTANT

Environmental Concerns!

Scientific research has shown that certain man-made chemicals can affect the earth’s naturally
occurring stratospheric ozone layer when released to the atmosphere. In particular, several of
the identified chemicals that may affect the ozone layer are refrigerants that contain Chlorine,
Fluorine and Carbon (CFCs) and those containing Hydrogen, Chlorine, Fluorine and Carbon
(HCFCs). Not all refrigerants containing these compounds have the same potential impact to
the environment. Trane advocates the responsible handing of all refrigerants – including
industry replacements for CFCs such as HCFCs and HFCs.

Responsible Refrigerant Practices!

Trane believes that responsible refrigerant practices are important to the environment, our
customers, and the air conditioning industry. All technicians who handle refrigerant must be
certified. The Federal Clean Air Act (Section 608) sets forth the requirements for handling,
reclaiming, recovering and recycling of certain refrigerants and the equipment that is used in
these service procedures. In addition, some states or municipalities may have additional
requirements that must also be adhered to for responsible management of refrigerants. Know
the applicable laws and follow them.

General Information
This installation manual is given as a guide to good practices in the installation and operation of
the Trane U-Match split models. However, it does not contain all the service procedures for the
systems, as these procedures must be performed by a qualified service technician, through the
maintenance contract with a reputable service company.
Read these operation instructions completely before servicing the unit.

Warranty
Warranty is based on the general terms and conditions by country. The warranty is void if the
equipment is modified or repaired without the written approval of The Trane Company, if the
operating limits are exceeded or if the control system or the electrical wiring is modified.
Damage due to inappropriate installation, lack of knowledge or failure to comply with the
manufacturer’s instructions, is not covered by the warranty obligation.
If the installation does not conform to the rules described in the Installation Manual, it may entail
cancellation of warranty and liabilities by The Trane Company.

Reception
On arrival, inspect the unit before signing the delivery note. Specify any damage of the unit on
the delivery note, and send a registered letter of protest to the last carrier of the goods within 72
hours of delivery. Nofity the dealer at the same time.
The unit should be totally inspected within 7 days of delivery. If any concealed damage is
discovered, send a registered letter of protest to the carrier within 7 days of delivery and notify
the local dealer.

About the Unit

These units are assembled, pressure tested, dehydrated, charged and run tested before
shipment. This manual contains information related to Trane U-Match units.

Refrigerant
The refrigerant provided by the manufacturer complies with all the requirements for the units.
When using a recycled or reprocessed refrigerant, we recommend its qualities be as good as
those of a new refrigerant. It is necessary to have the refrigerant tested by a qualified laboratory.
Failure to do so could void the warranty.

Important
These instructions do not cover all variations in systems, nor do they provide for every possible
contingency to be met in connection with installation. Should further information be desired or
should particular problems arise which are not covered sufficiently in this manual, the matter
should be referred to your authorized Trane dealer.

Note:
1. Standard pipe length of the system is 5m. When the length (L) of the connecting pipe is less
than or equals to 7m, there is no need to add additional refrigerant. If the connecting pipe is
longer than 7m, it is required to add additional refrigerant as according to the table above. In
the above table, it indicates the amount of additional refrigerant per extra metre (m) of pipe
length.

2. The connecting pipe shall be able to withstand the pressure of 6.0MPa. The pipe wall
thickness shall be at least 0.5 – 1.0mm.

Necessity of an Oil Trap

In order to avoid the oil held inside the riser piping flows back into the compressor when stopped and
cause liquid compression, or deterioration of oil return, it is necessary to provide oil trap at the
appropriate place in the gas piping.

Ttube Condenser Coil Temperature (at cooling mode, Ttube = outdoor coil temperature; at heating
mode, Ttube = indoor coil temperature)

ON / OFF

The unit is turned ON by pressing the Remote Controller ON / OFF button. Press this button again
turns the unit OFF. When the power is ON, no matter the compressor is started, the time interval
between two startups cannot be less than 3 minutes.

MODE Selection

Press the Remote Controller MODE button to select and display the following modes:

AUTO Ö COOL Ö DRY Ö FAN Ö HEAT

AUTO Mode

In AUTO mode, the system selects COOL, HEAT and FAN mode automatically according to the
change of ambient temperature. The protection function is the same with that of COOL or HEAT
mode.

• To = 25℃ (this is the factory default value, it cannot be changed by user)

• When Tamb ≥ To+1℃: run in cooling mode
• When Tamb ≤ To−2℃: run in heating mode
• When To–2oC < Tamb < To+1℃: run in fan mode

For inverter models, the unit will adjust the compressor running frequency automatically according to
the change of ambient temperature. (Note: only inverter units can adjust the compressor running
frequency)

35

COOL Mode

Running conditions of COOL mode

• If Tamb ≥ Tset, COOL mode will act, the compressor and outdoor fan will run, and the indoor fan
will run at set speed.
• If Tamb ≤ Tset–2oC, the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds delay,
and the indoor fan will run at set speed.
• If Tset–2oC < Tamb < Tset, the unit will keep running in the previous mode.

In COOL mode, the reversing valve will not be powered ON and the temperature setting range is
16oC ~ 30oC.

For inverter models, the unit will adjust compressor running frequency automatically according to the
temperature difference between set-point and return air temperature. (Note, only inverter units can
adjust compressor running frequency). If the temperature difference is high, the compressor running
frequency will be higher. If the temperature difference is low (0 ~ 1oC), the running frequency will be
low.

Protection function in COOL mode

Antifreezing Protection
Under COOL or DRY mode, after the compressor runs about 10 mins, when the evaporator pipe
temperature is low, the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds delay, the
indoor fan and swing motor will keep running in the original mode. When the evaporator pipe
temperature is high, the antifreezing protection is eliminated and the compressor has stopped for 3
minutes, the unit will resume running in the original mode.

36

Overcurrent Protection
When total input current rises over the stated value (about two times of compressor RLA as stated on
page 16 of the service manual), error code ‘E5’ will be displayed on wired controller (do not have this
function for remote controller), the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds
delay. For inverter units, if total input current is high, the compressor will run in limited or dropped
frequency for 3 mins maximumly, and then stop.

DRY Mode

Running conditions of DRY mode

• If Tamb > Tset, DRY mode will act, the indoor fan, the compressor and outdoor fan will run, the
indoor fan will run at low speed.
• If Tset–2oC ≤ Tamb ≤ Tset, the unit will keep running in the original mode.
• If Tamb < Tset–2oC, the compressor will stop running, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds,
the indoor fan will run at low speed.

In DRY mode, the reversing valve will not be powered ON and the temperature setting range is 16oC
~ 30oC.

For inverter models, the unit will adjust the compressor running frequency automatically according to
the change of ambient temperature. (Note: only inverter units can adjust compressor running
frequency)

37

Protection function in DRY mode

Antifreezing Protection
Under DRY mode, after the compressor runs about 10 mins, when the evaporator pipe temperature is
low, the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds delay, the indoor fan and
swing motor will keep running in the original mode. When the evaporator pipe temperature is high, the
antifreezing protection is eliminated and the compressor has stopped for 3 minutes, the unit will
resume running in the original mode.

Overcurrent Protection
When total input current rises over the stated value (about two times of compressor RLA as stated on
page 16 of the service manual), error code ‘E5’ will be displayed on wired controller (do not have this
function for remote controller), the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds
delay. For inverter units, if total input current is high, the compressor will run in limited or dropped
frequency for 3 mins, and then stop.

FAN Mode
In FAN mode, the indoor fan will run in High, Med, Low or Auto mode. The compressor, outdoor fan
and reversing valve will stop

HEAT Mode

Running conditions of HEAT mode

• If Tamb ≤ Tset+2oC, HEAT mode will act, the compressor, outdoor fan and reversing valve will
run simultaneously, the indoor fan will run after at most 2 mins delay.
• If Tset+2oC < Tamb < Tset+5oC, the unit will keep running in the original mode.
• If Tamb ≥ Tset+5oC, the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds delay
and the indoor fan will run for 60 seconds at the original speed and then stop.

In HEAT mode, the temperature setting range is 16oC ~ 30oC.

38

For inverter models, the unit will adjust compressor running frequency automatically according to the
temperature difference between set-point and return air temperature. (Note, only inverter units can
adjust compressor running frequency). If the temperature difference is high, the compressor running
frequency will be higher. If the temperature difference is low (0 ~ 1oC), the running frequency will be
low.

When the unit is turned off in HEAT mode, or switched to other mode from HEAT mode, the reversing
valve will be powered OFF after compressor stopped for 2 mins.

Defrost Cycle in HEAT mode

When frost is detected in the condenser, the system will enter into defrost cycle. When defrost cycle
is initiated, the compressor and the indoor fan will stop, the outdoor fan and reversing valve will stop
after 30 seconds delay. The compressor will start running after 30 seconds. When the compressor
has run for 8 mins, the compressor will stop. After 30 seconds, the reversing valve opens. After
another 60 seconds, the compressor and outdoor will resume running. The indoor fan will run after 2
mins delay at the latest, and the temperature display on the panel shows H1.

39

Protection function in HEAT mode

Overcurrent Protection
When total input current rises over the stated value (about two times of compressor RLA as stated on
page 16 of the service manual), error code ‘E5’ will be displayed on wired controller (do not have this
function for remote controller), the compressor will stop, the outdoor fan will stop after 30 seconds
delay. For inverter units, if total input current is high, the compressor will run in limited or dropped
frequency for 3 mins, and then stop.

Under HEAT mode, when the compressor is stopped due to malfunction, the indoor fan will blow at
low fan speed for 60 seconds and then stop.

TEMP setting button

Each time TEMP + or TEMP − button is pressed, the set temperature will be increased or
decreased by 1oC. The allowable adjusting range is 16oC ~ 30oC. Temperature adjustment is not
available in AUTO mode.

40

Timer control

The unit will be ON or OFF according to the timer setting by the remote controller.

Sleep Control

When the unit is in COOL or DRY mode, after SLEEP mode has been set, the preset Tset will be
increased by 1oC after the SLEEP program has run for 1 hour, and the Tset will be increased by
another 1oC after 2 hours. When the Tset has been increased by 2oC total in two hours, the unit will
run at this set temperature and at the set speed.

When the unit is in HEAT mode, after SLEEP mode has been set, the preset Tset will be decreased by
1oC after the SLEEP program has run for 1 hour, and the Tset will be decreased by another 1oC after 2
hours. When the Tset has been decreased by 2oC total in two hours, the unit will run at this set
temperature and at the set speed.

In AUTO or FAN mode, the setting temperature will not change.

Indoor Fan Control

The fan will run at high, medium or low speed as according to the remote controller fan speed (HIGH,
MED or LOW). When the fan speed is set to AUTO, the indoor fan will select fan speed (HIGH, MED
or LOW) automatically to ambient temperature.

41

Swing Control

Use Remote Controller SWING button to control SWING ON and OFF, the indoor louver will swing
only when the indoor fan is running.

Buzzer Control

When the unit is powered ON, or receives signal from remote controller, or AUTO key is pressed, the
buzzer will give out a ‘beep’.

Power-off Memory Function

• Under unit ON state, when power OFF and power ON, the power supply for outdoor unit will be
turned ON after 3 mins.
• Under unit OFF state, when power OFF and power ON, the power supply for outdoor unit will
be turn ON immediately.
• Contents of memory: Mode, Swing, Set Fan Speed, Set Temperature, Timing, etc.

Compressor Delay Protection

When the unit runs in COOL, DRY or HEAT mode, there is a 3 mins restart delay for the compressor.

Overload Protection

Ttube is the Condenser Coil Temperature (at cooling mode, Ttube = outdoor coil temperature; at heating
mode, Ttube = indoor coil temperature)

When Ttube is too high, the compressor will stop. Under HEAT mode, indoor fan will blow for 60
seconds at low fan speed and then stop. Under other modes, indoor fan will run at set speed.

Compressor Discharge Temperature Protection

When compressor discharge temperature is too high, the compressor will stop. When the compressor
discharge temperature resumes normal, and the compressor has stopped for 3 minutes, the unit will
resume to its original status.

42

Communication Malfunction

When correct signal is not detected for 3 minutes, error code ‘E6’ will be displayed on the wired
controller (do not have this function for wireless remote controller) to show the communication
malfunction. The outdoor unit will stop (the same stop procedures as under the condition of the unit
meets set-point temperature). ’

Module Protection (only for inverter models)

For inverter models, when compressor power module protection is activated, error code ‘H5’ will be
displayed on the wired controller (do not have this function for wireless remote controller) to show the
module protection stage, the compressor will stop running. After the compressor has been stopped
for 3 minutes, it will resume running.

SAVE (only available for Wired Controller)

SAVE mode is used to limit the temperature setting range by the property owner for energy saving.
This function is only available for Wired Controller.

For COOL mode, the default temperature setting range is 16oC ∼ 30oC. In SAVE mode, the lowest
set-point limit can be adjusted and fixed to a higher value (e.g. 25oC).

For HEAT mode, the default temperature setting range is 16oC ∼ 30oC. In SAVE mode, the highest
set-point limit can be adjusted and fixed to a lower value (e.g. 26oC).

QUIET (only available for Wired Controller)

Under QUIET mode, the indoor fan is limited to run at low speed when the set-point temperature is
achieved. This function is only available for Wired Controller.
