I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes)


 Students will be able to create their own colony based on what they have learned
about William Penn building his colony by filling in their Making Your Own
Colony worksheet.
 Students will be able to identify what William Penn promised the people coming
to the new land, how Germantown got its name and why Philadelphia was
formatted in a checkerboard pattern by filling out the exit ticket with 100 %
accuracy.

V. Implementation

A. Introduction –

 I will introduce the lesson by showing the students a video that highlights
the most important parts of the lesson. After the video I will ask students
about anything they saw that stood out to them or that they found
interesting.
 I will explain to them that we will be learning about William Penn and his
new colony that he created. There is a fun activity that you will be able to
do at the end but you have to make sure you pay attention so you will
know how to do it!

B. Development –
 I will be using the powerpoint I had made.
 "William Penn was a Quaker. Quakers are a religious group of people who
lived in England that believed they could talk to God without a priest or
minister.
William Penn had gotten thrown in jail for standing up for his beliefs
many times. King Charles II was the king of England. He owed money to
Penn’s father who passed away. So, he paid the debt to his father by
giving William land in North America where he could start a colony.”
 “A charter is an official paper that gives a person or business certain
rights. With this charter William Penn was able to write laws for the
colony. The First Frame of Government - He created a law that allowed
people to practice whatever religion they wanted. The Great Law - He
created another law which made sure that people could have a voice in
their government.”
 “They will brainstorm about how Pennsylvania got its name in their
groups for 1 minute and write their ideas on their desk with a dry erase
marker. After they brainstorm, I will have the groups share out. Then I
will go on telling them how Pennsylvania actually got its name.”
 “Sylvania - woods. William Penn decided to put his father’s name in front
to honor him. That’s how we got the name Pennsylvania! Penn started
making a plan for Philadelphia which means “City of Brotherly Love”.
William wanted his new colony to be a place of equality and peace. He
constructed the city in a checkerboard pattern because it made it easier for
people to find places.”
 “I will show students a sketch of Philadelphia that shows the checkerboard
pattern.”
 “William Penn called Pennsylvania the “holy experiment”. This was
because his vision was to build the colony off of Quaker beliefs. This
meant that everyone would live together in harmony. Penn started to sell
his land in Pennsylvania to other colonists to live there. People from
England, Germany, Ireland, Wales and Scotland wanted to live there for
freedom of religion and opportunity”.
 “I will show them a quote from William Penn that he used to try and get
people from other countries to come to his new colony.”
 “In 1683, 13 German families came to Pennsylvania. These people were
led by Francis Daniel Pastorius. When they arrived they established
Germantown.”
 “I will tell them a fun fact: By 1750 half of Pennsylvania’s population
spoke German.”
 “When William Penn came to Pennsylvania there was already Native
Americans living there. He treated them respect and made a treaty with
them. Treaty - an official agreement. This treaty was made so that both
colonists and the Native Americans could live in peace without fighting.”
 “In the Pennsylvania government there was a council that suggested laws.
Then there was a group of people called the General Assembly that voted
on them. In 1701, William Penn wrote a document. This allowed the
General Assembly to propose new laws for the colony. Privilege - a right
or special benefit.”
 “The Liberty Bell was hung in the Philadelphia state house to celebrate the
Charter’s fifteenth anniversary in 1751.”
 After they will complete a worksheet about making their own colony.
 Then they will fill the exit ticket.

VI. Reflective Response

I knew this lesson was going to be the hardest for them because it had the
most content in it. Despite my predictions they did really well. They were fully
engaged and were able to complete the worksheet, Making Your Own Colony.
The only thing that I had to correct was them writing about their colony in
modern times. They were filling out the worksheet as if it was in modern times.
For example, for materials to bring they were writing down things such as their
phone and their video games. However, that was not allowed because they had to
think as if they were in the past and in the time of the colonists.

 Did I build on content, product, or process from previous lessons? When I


taught this lesson, I taught a lot of the content that was on the pre-test for
them to see the connection and what information will be on the final tests.
 How does this lesson scaffold the learning for the next lesson? I made
sure to go through the content chronologically and make sure that I give an
introduction to people that will be mentioned in the next lesson. I also
mentioned some causes that will have an effect in the next lesson.
