Self-Study Component (ESL742, First Semester 2021-2022):

Learning and Practice with System Advisor Model (SAM) Software

Several software provide directly relevant inputs and insights matching with the learning
objectives of the course ESL742: Economics and Financing of Renewable Energy Systems.
One of these, which is, as yet, available free for download and is used extensively for techno-
economic appraisal of several different types of renewable energy systems (in one of the
attached files a sample list of research papers that make use of the software is presented) is the
System Advisor Model (SAM) made available by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory,
USA.

Please download the latest version of the System Advisor Model (you may do a google search
for “ System Advisor Model download” or go to https://sam.nrel.gov for the same).

Each student has to learn at least two modules (Performance Models) of the System Advisor
Model and to have sufficient practice with the modules so as to be able to make use of the same
for several different useful purposes such system design and techno-economic performance
appraisal. To begin with, you may start with one of the modules that suits your interest and is
relevant for your countr/state/district. Once you have practiced with any one of the modules
and have undertaken studies using the same, any other module is likely to be somewhat similar
except the technological differences. Please note that you may choose a suitable location of
your choice in your country/state/district for undertaking the exercise(s).

Please note that one of the assignments of the course (also attached) is also designed around
the studies reported in the literature that have used System Advisor Model. Thus, you may like
to have synergy in the choice of your research paper for the assignment and the module(s) of
SAM you select for practice (at least in the initial stage).
In view of a large number of research papers published in reputed journals making use of the
System Advisor Model software, acquiring ability to proficiently use the software would
certainly of great value as a professional. Of course, for short term, the Major Test of this course
(ESL742) would certainly have question(s) from this self-study component.

In case any clarification is needed please let us know.
