Solve the following problems (20 pts each)
1. A power nozzle throws a jet of water which is 3 inches in diameter. The diameter of the base of
the nozzle and the approach pipe is 8 inches. If the power in the jet is 50 hp and the gauge
pressure at the base of the nozzle is 130 psi, compute for the head lost in the nozzle?
b. What is the maximum horizontal range to which the stream can be thrown neglecting air
resistance?
2. The pump in figure 1 (on the board) draws water from a reservoir and discharges through 2½ in.
hose which terminates in a nozzle having a jet diameter of 1 in. The head losses are: 1-2, 5 ft; 2-3,
negligible; 3-4, 30 ft; 4-5, 10 ft. Compute the required horsepower output of the pump if
discharge is 250 gpm.
3. The Venturi meter in Figure 3 on the board is being used to measure the flow of oil with a
specific gravity of 0.858. The differential gauge fluid is water . The meter coefficient is 0.975.
What is the discharge is z =7.2 in?
4. The pressure head difference between the inlet and throat of the 3 in. by 1 in. Venturi meter
shown in figure 4 is measured in terms of a mercury differential manometer equipped with a scale
which reads in inches. With water flowing through the meter and filling the gauge tubes to the
tops of the mercury columns, compute the numerical constant N in the equation for theoretical
