Solve the following problems:
1. A closed system executes a reversible process where in the pressure and volume varies in
accordance with pV n = C. Q = 16.247 kJ, U = 47.475 kJ, If p1= 138 kPaa, V1 = 141.6
liters and p2 = 827.4 kPaa, find:
a. n and V2 (20 pts)
b. If the system is steady flow with KE = 3 kJ and PE = -4 kJ, find work (10 pts)
2. A rigid tank of 20 ft3 capacity contains air at 100 psia and 70 deg. F. The tank is equipped
with a relief valve that opens at a pressure of 125 psia and remains open until the pressure
drops to 120 psia. If a fire causes the valve to operate as described,
a. What is the air temperature when the valve opens. (10 pts)
b. What is the quantity of air lost due to the fire? Assume the temperature of the gas
remains constant during the discharge. (15 pts)
3. A rigid tank contains a certain amount of ideal gas with molecular mass of 28, at 120 kPa
and 20C initially. 3 kg of this gas is then added to the tank. If the final pressure and
temperature of the gas in the tank are found to be 240 kPa and 20 C, what is the volume
of the tank?(10 pts)
b. If this gas then undergoes a change of state until the temperature becomes 300
C, with a change of internal energy equal to 1250 kJ, what is the change in
enthalpy? (10 pts)
c. What is the specific heat ratio for this gas? (5 pts)
4. A steady state, steady flow thermodynamic system receives 100 lb/min of fluid at 30 psia
and 200 F and discharges it from a point 80 ft above the entrance section at 150 psia and
600 F. The fluid enters with a velocity of 7200 fpm and leaves with a velocity of 2400
fpm. During this process, there are supplied 25,000 Btu/hr of heat from an external
source and the increase in enthalpy is 2 Btu/lb. Determine the work done in hp. ( 10 pts)
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient
with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
