Thermodynamics (THDY-210) Test 1

1. Systems can be classified as either open or closed.

i. Give two examples of a closed system. (2 Marks)
ii. List 2 characteristics of an open system. (1 Mark)

2. What is the difference between intensive and extensive properties?

(1 Mark)

3. A classroom that normally contains 40 people is to be air-conditioned with window

air-conditioning units of 5-kW cooling capacity. A person at rest may be assumed
to dissipate heat at a rate of about 360 kJ/h. There are 10 lightbulbs in the room,
each with a rating of 100 W. The rate of heat transfer to the classroom through the
walls and the windows is estimated to be 15,000 kJ/h. If the room air is to be
maintained at a constant temperature of 21°C, determine the number of window
air-conditioning units required. (3 Marks)

4. A rigid tank contains a hot fluid that is cooled while being stirred by a paddle wheel.
Initially, the internal energy of the fluid is 0.16 kWh. During the cooling process, the
fluid loses 500 kJ of heat, and the paddle wheel does 100 kJ of work on the fluid.
Determine the final internal energy of the fluid. Neglect the energy stored in the
paddle wheel. (5 Marks)

5. A piston/cylinder contains carbon dioxide at 300 kPa, 100°C with a volume of 0.2
𝑚3 . Mass is added at such a rate that the gas compresses according to the relation
𝑃𝑉 1.2 = constant to a final temperature of 200°C. Determine the work done during
the process. (4 Marks)

6. A piston cylinder has 1.5 kg of air at 300 K and 150 kPa. It is now heated up in a
two-step process. First at constant volume to 1000 K (state 2), then followed by a
constant pressure process to 1500 K (state 3). Find the final volume and the work
done in the process. (5 Marks)

7. Consider a two-part process with an expansion from 0.1 to 0.2 𝑚3 at a constant

pressure of 150 kPa followed by an expansion from 0.2 to 0.4 𝑚3 with a linearly
rising pressure from 150 kPa ending at 300 kPa.
i. Show the process in a P-V diagram. (4 Marks)
ii. Find the boundary work. (5 Marks)
