The Power of Movement

Dance:
Dance in the Philippine regions is dominated
by the new creative interpretations of
traditional and folk dances which are
performed by members of the community
during festivals such as the Sinulog in Cebu and
Dinagyang in Iloilo
Contemporary dance is a performing art that
involves rhythmic body movements within a given
space, choreographed following the musical beat.

It is performed either by dance performers in front

of an audience or by everyone on the dance floor.

it is an expression of an idea or emotion, releasing

energy or simply taking delight in music and the
dance movement itself.

There are three big names in Philippine dance

described in this section: Alice Garcia Reyes,
Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, and Douglas Nierras.
Established the Alice Reyes Modern Dance Company
with dancers from the Bayanihan Dance Company, UE
Dance Troupe, and Dance Theater Philippines.
Reyes also initiated the professionalization of dance
arts in the country with her persistence in raising funds
for the company so that performers can become full-
time dancers with decent earnings.

On June 20, 2010, Reyes was proclaimed National

Artist for Dance.
In 1984, she studied ballet in Europe and became a
prima ballerina of Kirov Ballet in Leningrad (now St.
Petersburg, Russia).
He has more than two decades of involvement in
dance through choreography, pedagogy, and production.
He is famous for his Metanoia, in which he
collaborated with musician Ryan Cayabyab to create a
34-minute ballet set to the five general parts of the Latin
Mass-the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei.

Critic Marge Enriquez says of Douglas Nierras, “This

choreographer has evolved into one who tackles deep,
spiritual themes, interpreting them in a dramatic way.
Nobody has ever gone this far to push modern
Philippine dance to greater heights.” (NCCA n.d.)

Disco dancing is a dance style popularized
during the 1970s.
Disco dancing is associated with john Travolta’s
dance style in the movie Saturday Night Fever.
It is characterized by movement in the hip and
the pelvic regions of the body and raising of
arms to the beat of the disco music.
Hip-hop, which originated in America, refers
to street Dance styles performed to hip-hop
music.
It includes dance styles such as breaking,
locking, and popping.
What distinguishes hip-hop from other dance
styles ;is that it is often “freestyle” or
improvisation.
