Calculating Weight and Mass

Mass is related to the amount of inertia an object has, which its its tendency to resist a change in motion. This is why Newton’s first law of
motion is also known as the Law of Inertia, since an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless
acted on by an unbalanced (net) force. The weight of an object depends both on its mass and the acceleration due to gravity that is specific
to the planet on which the object exist. Earth’s acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2. Below is the formula for weight. Use it to solve the
following problems. Begin each problem by writing the formula, then make substitutions, and solve for the final answer with units.

Weight (N) = Mass (kg) x Acceleration due to gravity (m/s2)

ANSWER KEY
Calculating Weight and Mass
1.) Calculate the 2.) Jenny experiences 3.) Calculate the
weight of this an average downward acceleration due to
lunchbox if its force of 441 N gravity on the planet
mass is 1.2 kg. anywhere she goes on where this 80 kg
Earth. Calculate her astronaut weighs only 304
mass. N.

W = mg W = mg W = mg
W = (1.2)(9.8) 441 = m(9.8) 304 = (80)(g)
W = 11.8 N /9.8 /9.8 /80 /80
m = 45 kg g = 3.8 m/s2

4.) This bird has 5.) Joe is carrying a 6.) This armed
a mass of 0.8 kg. load of building rover weighs 1900 N

weight of the bird injuring his back by 340 kg. What is the
acting downward supporting 882 N of weight. acceleration due to gravity
as it flies. Calculate the mass of what on its current planet?
he is carrying.
W = mg W = mg so g = W/m
W = (0.8)(9.8) W = mg so m = W/g g = 1900 / 340
W = 7.84 N m = 882 / 9.8 g = 5.6 m/s2
m = 90 kg

7.) This feather 8.) Java the 9.) This 200 kg

N of downward mass of 50 kg. 1,960 N on earth
force. Assuming it How much would only weigh
is on earth, what is would he weigh 324 N on the
its mass? on earth? moon. Calculate the moon’s
acceleration due to gravity.
W = mg so m = W/g W = mg
m = 0.075 / 9.8 W = (50)(9.8) W = mg so g = W/m
m = 0.0076 kg or 7.6 g W = 490 N gmoon = 324 / 200
gmoon = 1.62 m/s2
