 Who I Am?

My name is Lorena Hernandez Quintero I was born in Bakersfield, California but have been raised

by my parents in Las Vegas Nevada since the age of 4. My parents are from a small city named

Toluca Mexico; therefore, I have been raised with Hispanic traditions and Hispanic cultural

backgrounds. I am 19 years old, and I am fluent in English and Spanish. Growing up Spanish was

the only language being spoken at home and learning how to express myself in English throughout

my element rather school years was a challenge. Being raised in a Hispanic household meant

learning to value the cost of things, Chores and homework were always implemented and by doing

that I obtained a small allowance once a month that I would later be able to use as a reward.

Holidays in my culture are celebrated in a distinct way, an important holiday for my culture is

Christmas. Coming from a Catholic religion I celebrate the birthing of Jesus on Christmas Eve. Día

de los Reyes magos or the day of the three kings is celebrated on the 6th of January. I gather

around with my family and cut the famous “rosca de reyes “. This is a bread that contains baby

figures hidden inside the bread the baby representing Jesus. Whoever eats a slice of bread and

find a baby hidden inside will have to cook a meal on February 2 nd for the family. Other Hispanic

cultures specifically in Mexico are a costumed to giving gifts on this day rather than on Christmas.

What I love most about my culture is the traditional food. Anything from soup, to tacos, or tortas

(Hispanic sandwiches) are my favorite. My favorite meal is green enchiladas, this is a meal that I

would be able to eat daily.

Growing up I have developed different hobbies and interest; I am a full-time student in college, and

I am currently working full time but when I have some free time on my hands, I enjoy watching

movies The winter season has always been my favorite time for movies especially while lighting on

a candle and snacking on some cookies and a side cup of coffee. I am a fan of coffee and always

seem to find some excuse for preparing a new cup of coffee. At home I am surrounded by three

younger nephews so most of my free time also consist of playing with marvel superheroes and

snacking on pizza.

I must admit nothing to crazy and tragic has happened in my life which must be a great thing. I

have lived in Las Vegas since the age of 4 and I have been raised in the same house since the

age of 5. I have grown alongside many nieces and nephews, but I am the first one in my family to

continue their education after high school graduation. I am currently enrolled at the college of

southern Nevada where my goal is to obtain my associates degree in elementary education. After

obtaining my degree my goal is to become a substitute teacher and at the same time transfer over

to a 4-year institution where I will obtain my bachelor’s degree. Teaching has always been

something I have been interested in. My long-term goal is to become a teacher who will inspire the

upcoming generation with a sense of purpose, dignity, and individuality. I want to impress upon my

students the importance of thinking for themselves and identifying their purpose in this life
