1.0 Introduction
The following calculation report relates to the design of structure to allow for the residential conversion of
the ground and lower ground floors at the following property:
The Turnbull Building
Newcastle upon Tyne
The existing multi storey property is constructed in external perimeter solid masonry walls with internal
cast iron columns and beams supporting timber floor structures. The frames are positioned at
approximately 3750mm crs. Similar residential conversions have been completed to the upper floors of
the building. By inspection of the existing design-imposed loadings, the structure is generally adequate for
the conversion for the reduced residential imposed loadings.
The structure is listed and all proposals are to be reviewed by list building officer prior to commencement.
The works involve the installation of new access stair to the lower ground floor with trimming structure to
suit. The new trimming structure is to be constructed in a combination of timber and steelwork. A new
retaining wall is to be constructed along the western boundary to create access and lightwells into the
lower ground apartments. The retaining wall is to be constructed in reinforced concrete and is to have a
retaining height of up to 4000mm.
