Network modeling in Resource Manager
Resource Manager contains a detailed model of the physical, logical and service
layer resources within the network (Figure 2). The following section includes
an overview of the types of object that would be expected in Resource
Manager. The list is not exhaustive. Network models in Amdocs OSS are built
from powerful, flexible templates – new device, service and circuit types for
example can be readily configured to address the needs of new and emerging
technologies.

Each instance of a Resource Manager object inherits the data attributes from its
template. Standard attributes of all objects include identifiers, alias names and status
information. Any number of additional attributes can be added to the template using
Configurator (see ED 003039 Configurator Product Description for further details).

Multi-technology and multi-vendor network model

Resource Manager has been deployed across all major transmission, data and
cellular network technologies. There is no need to partition the network into
technology and vendor-specific domains (although this is an option using
Partition Manager), as Resource Manager has the ability to model
technologies and equipment in an integrated model. For example, a
consolidated network model can include a hierarchy of fibers, optical, ATM
and IP technologies, all coexisting in a single, unified network model.
This support for multiple technologies also extends to capacity management
for both TDM and Packet network technologies. Amdocs Resource Manager
combines sophisticated Class of Service based capacity management of packet
networks with the ability to bridge between technologies not only in terms of
configuration, but also in terms of capacity utilisation.
Class of Service modeling supports:
 Management of Logical Bandwidth
 Automated available bandwidth calculation
 Overbooking of capacity
This provides the ability to do both Traffic Engineered capacity management across
large swathes of network infrastructure, but also to do accurate service-based QoS
based modeling in Next Generation Networks. Refer to the CoS Management –
Amdocs Resource Manager 8.1 .0 document for additional details.

Physical network modeling

Resource Manager’s physical model can include, but is by no means limited to, the
following physical entities:
Network elements represented as a hierarchy of racks, shelves, slots, cards
and ports. Both active and passive equipment are modeled
Physical links, for example copper, fiber, coax, leased, microwave and
radio
Network regions, partitions and domains, interfaces to OLOs, or sinks for
dial-up connections
General-purpose nodes that can be used as to model miscellaneous
network elements as required

Logical network modeling

Resource Manager’s logical model supports a thorough and complete representation
of the circuit carrying capability of a telecommunications network.

Information Security Level 2 – Sensitive 13

Proprietary and Confidential Information of Amdocs
Resource Manager 8.1.0 Product Description

The Resource Manager holds information on the following logical elements of

network inventory:
 Timeslots representing subdivisions of circuits
Circuits representing wavelength, time or frequency division technologies,
as well as data-oriented technologies. Bandwidth usage is recorded, for
example, timeslot bandwidths in SDH and SONET. Circuit protection can
also be defined
Hierarchies of Logical ports representing the points of termination of data
circuits, for example, IP or ATM
Capacity offered by logical ports or interfaces that can be ‘consumed’ by
connected data circuits
In device configuration of cross connections between Logical ports.
Topologies modeling standard configurations, for example, SDH rings or
base station subsystems in a cellular network
Numbers representing IP addresses – including IPv6, telephone numbers
and number pools

Cross-domain routing
There are no restrictions in Amdocs OSS as to the scope of a circuit crossing multiple
carriers, access networks or customer premises. A multi-part circuit is created by
defining end-to-end paths from the concatenation of circuits from many network
domains. For example, an end-to-end path could comprise:
An access component over copper to a customer CPE
A leased component representing bandwidth provided by a third party
carrier
A backbone component over SDH or PDH
Termination in the network on a switch port or CPE equipment
Different protection schemes can be applied to the different domains as appropriate.
For example, physical protection could apply in the access network with two routes to
the CPE, while SNCP could apply in the backbone SDH network.
Unresolved or partially resolved circuits (that is, those where the underlying paths are
undefined) provide additional flexibility allowing, for example, a circuit to be firmly
resolved in one domain representing a known and managed network, and unresolved
in another domain, representing passage across a third party network.

Converged service infrastructures

Resource Manager incorporates the key IT management capabilities to capture,
visualize and manage the connectivity and interdependencies within and beyond
Service Delivery Platforms in next generation environments. This provides not only
the end-to-end view of connectivity from content and other delivery servers to the
customer premises, but also provides visibility of the complex architectures that
support those servers.
Visualization is essential to understand the often complex and sophisticated
relationships between applications and service delivery platform structures. Resource

Chapter 2. Product Features

Manager’s IT capabilities provide an Application View as well as browser support,

which coupled with the visualizations for physical and logical network connectivity,
enables the user to view both the IT infrastructure and how the IT platforms are
connected with the network.
Effective capacity management results in better utilization of IT infrastructure and
enables the controlled assignment of applications and services to IT servers and
platforms. Resource Manager provides the framework for defining capacity attributes
on IT infrastructure objects, and for the implementation of business controlling the
allocation of resources.
Understanding the relationship between customers, services, the service delivery
platforms and the network infrastructure is a key component of effective service
assurance. Amdocs Resource Manager provides significant support for a network to
service relationship model, enabling the impact of IT infrastructure failures to be
understood.
More information on the IT management capabilities of Resource Manager can be
found in the IT Management – Amdocs Resource Manager 8.1.0 document.

Topologies
A key feature of Resource Manager is its support for the concept of topologies.
Topologies are used to model standard network structures such as:
SONET, SDH and optical rings, chains and meshes
 IP/VPN networks and services
ATM access tree and core meshes
Base station chains and loops in a cellular network
Topologies represent an extremely powerful network modeling concept allowing
network entities to be grouped together and summarized as high-level structures.
This greatly simplifies many aspects of network administration. In addition,
topologies can contain other topologies.
A key benefit of topologies is that they facilitate network operations and
visualizations on a large scale. For example, wizards acting on topologies can be used
for circuit design and visualizations. Sophisticated, interactive WebReports can act
on topologies to provide capacity summaries of large network structures. Topologies
are a vital means by which volume can be managed in large networks.

Protection modeling
Resource Manager is specifically designed to all aspects of telecommunications
network modeling – including secured or protected routing. Network protection can
be implemented in a variety of ways, depending upon the technologies in use.
At the lowest level, physical diversity can be used to implement a resilient circuit (for
example, through using multiple links or diverse node-link chains). In addition,
certain infrastructure technologies, especially SONET and SDH, provide support for a
range of protection schema that can be applied at different levels of the circuit
hierarchy.
During the provisioning process, logical and physical resources can be identified
according to the resilience requirements of the service being implemented. In

Information Security Level 2 – Sensitive 15

Proprietary and Confidential Information of Amdocs
Resource Manager 8.1.0 Product Description

addition, the protected state of a circuit can be readily viewed when assessing the
impact of network faults on customers and services.

Service modeling
Resource Manager maintains a model of network capacity, keeping an inventory of
the provision of network capacity to customers. Logical and physical inventory held
by an operator is delivered to customers as billable services. Resource Manager
records the relationship between the network allocated to a customer service, the
service itself and the customer. This enables the operator to understand the
relationship between any component of the network, at any physical or logical layer,
and the services and customers that component supports. It enables the capture of new
service requirements and the design of the network configuration required to fulfill
the requirement.
The service model is highly configurable. Where physical entities are typically
configured on the basis of equipment manufacturers and logical entities on the basis
of technologies, service entities are configured on an operator’s service offerings and
their business processes.
The service model includes support for objects representing customers, services and
the resources used to deliver the services.

Resource Manager functionality

Configurable business rules and constraints
Resource Manager understands telecommunication technologies; data integrity and
network modeling rules are provided as part of the inventory’s fundamental design.
Vendor or technology specific rules are defined using Configurator and allow
Resource Manager to control modeling constraints such as card compatibility,
technology compatibility, device naming and much more.
Furthermore, a service provider’s own business rule can be implemented in Resource
Manager in the same way as vendor specific rules. More complex business rules can
be deployed using scripting that influences the choices and behavior of the user
interface tools.
The ability to reserve resources, both free and currently in use, for future use as part
of a specific project provides core support for future planning using the Resource
Manager environment.
Engineering and technical rules are implemented through a combination of wizards
and templates. Templates can be defined to capture simple constraints such as:
The numbers and types of cards that can be inserted into a device
The bandwidth associated with a given type of circuit
The timeslot strategy associated with a given circuit type and bandwidth
Device templates specifying the common card combinations that are
available for a particular device
The types of circuit that be used within a particular topology
The port configuration of a card
More complex constraint modeling is implemented algorithmically in wizards.

16 Information Security Level 2 – Sensitive

Proprietary and Confidential Information of Amdocs
Chapter 2. Product Features

Examples of wizard constraints include:

Connection constraints to determine which combination of physical and
logical resources can be correctly connected
Card population rules. Adding a card to a device often forms part of the
provisioning process. It is therefore important to be able to accurately
model the associated constraints. As a vendor introduces a new card or
equipment version, card population rules are often complex and subject to
frequent change. Population rules are implemented in wizard callouts and
are easily maintained
 Naming convention rules

Powerful selection of assignments using wizards

Resource Manager is supplied with over thirty standard wizards. Wizards provide a
means to streamline repetitive actions such as equipment build, circuit design and
port allocation. All wizards have the capability to modify designs as well as creating
them.
Resource Manager provides bulk inventory operations that enable a user to quickly
and easily create objects and related components in a single wizard action. For
example, copying devices, adding populated shelves to devices or creating a new site
with installed equipment are all achievable using a single wizard.

Planning design projects

Planned configurations and assignments created by Resource Manager during the
design process are expressed in terms of Resource Manager DesignRecords.
DesignRecords are typically managed using design Projects. Design Projects are a
feature of Resource Manager but may be created by the Resource Manager Project
Wizard, Task Engine, or through the API. The status of Projects can be monitored
using standard reporting facilities, enabling the overall provisioning status of a
service to be determined. Unfulfilled service orders that are about to exceed a
delivery deadline can be readily identified, and the associated DesignRecords
investigated.

Comprehensive reporting
Resource Manager is supplied with standard WebReports that provide
visualization of network capacity and network relationships. The reports
contain a number of filtering options as well as the ability through context-
sensitive menus to link to reports and views of other related objects contained in the
reports.

Persistent audit trails

Resource Manager provides a complete history audit trail for all inventory objects.
The Resource Manager provides an audit page for each object with a time, date and
user stamp for when the object was created and last modified.
A DesignRecord is generated each time an entity is created, modified or deleted
(using the wizards or through the API). DesignRecords provide a technical summary
of the change and may be browsed or queried on. Again, a time, date and user stamp
is issued for each DesignRecord.
