Each instance of a Resource Manager object inherits the data attributes from its
template. Standard attributes of all objects include identifiers, alias names and status
information. Any number of additional attributes can be added to the template using
Configurator (see ED 003039 Configurator Product Description for further details).
Cross-domain routing
There are no restrictions in Amdocs OSS as to the scope of a circuit crossing multiple
carriers, access networks or customer premises. A multi-part circuit is created by
defining end-to-end paths from the concatenation of circuits from many network
domains. For example, an end-to-end path could comprise:
An access component over copper to a customer CPE
A leased component representing bandwidth provided by a third party
carrier
A backbone component over SDH or PDH
Termination in the network on a switch port or CPE equipment
Different protection schemes can be applied to the different domains as appropriate.
For example, physical protection could apply in the access network with two routes to
the CPE, while SNCP could apply in the backbone SDH network.
Unresolved or partially resolved circuits (that is, those where the underlying paths are
undefined) provide additional flexibility allowing, for example, a circuit to be firmly
resolved in one domain representing a known and managed network, and unresolved
in another domain, representing passage across a third party network.
Topologies
A key feature of Resource Manager is its support for the concept of topologies.
Topologies are used to model standard network structures such as:
SONET, SDH and optical rings, chains and meshes
IP/VPN networks and services
ATM access tree and core meshes
Base station chains and loops in a cellular network
Topologies represent an extremely powerful network modeling concept allowing
network entities to be grouped together and summarized as high-level structures.
This greatly simplifies many aspects of network administration. In addition,
topologies can contain other topologies.
A key benefit of topologies is that they facilitate network operations and
visualizations on a large scale. For example, wizards acting on topologies can be used
for circuit design and visualizations. Sophisticated, interactive WebReports can act
on topologies to provide capacity summaries of large network structures. Topologies
are a vital means by which volume can be managed in large networks.
Protection modeling
Resource Manager is specifically designed to all aspects of telecommunications
network modeling – including secured or protected routing. Network protection can
be implemented in a variety of ways, depending upon the technologies in use.
At the lowest level, physical diversity can be used to implement a resilient circuit (for
example, through using multiple links or diverse node-link chains). In addition,
certain infrastructure technologies, especially SONET and SDH, provide support for a
range of protection schema that can be applied at different levels of the circuit
hierarchy.
During the provisioning process, logical and physical resources can be identified
according to the resilience requirements of the service being implemented. In
addition, the protected state of a circuit can be readily viewed when assessing the
impact of network faults on customers and services.
Service modeling
Resource Manager maintains a model of network capacity, keeping an inventory of
the provision of network capacity to customers. Logical and physical inventory held
by an operator is delivered to customers as billable services. Resource Manager
records the relationship between the network allocated to a customer service, the
service itself and the customer. This enables the operator to understand the
relationship between any component of the network, at any physical or logical layer,
and the services and customers that component supports. It enables the capture of new
service requirements and the design of the network configuration required to fulfill
the requirement.
The service model is highly configurable. Where physical entities are typically
configured on the basis of equipment manufacturers and logical entities on the basis
of technologies, service entities are configured on an operator’s service offerings and
their business processes.
The service model includes support for objects representing customers, services and
the resources used to deliver the services.
Comprehensive reporting
Resource Manager is supplied with standard WebReports that provide
visualization of network capacity and network relationships. The reports
contain a number of filtering options as well as the ability through context-
sensitive menus to link to reports and views of other related objects contained in the
reports.
Application View
The Application View is generated for a selected Application and presents a graphical
representation of its relationships with other Applications, with Logical Environments
and with physical devices and servers.
Card View
The Card view provides a schematic representation of a card that shows the ports and
any links connected to a port.
Circuit View
The Circuit view provides a means by which you can view all of the circuits
associated with a selected network object, from location level down to port level, in a
graphical format.
Connection Views
Connection views display detailed information on the different types of connections
shown in the Location and Network views.
Elevation View
The Elevation view provides a schematic representation of a device.
IT Infrastructure View
The IT Infrastructure View provides graphical visualization of IT infrastructure and
the relationships between the displayed components. The view can include
applications, numbers, platforms and physical equipment, and as for the existing
Network View in Amdocs Resource Manager, is constructed by populating the view
with selected objects.
Link View
The Link view provides a means by which you can view all of the links associated
with a selected object, such as a location or a port, in a graphical format.
Location View
The Location view displays a number of devices and locations, and their physical or
logical connectivity.
Network View
The Network view displays a number of devices and their physical or logical
connectivity.
Shelf View
The Shelf view provides a schematic representation of a shelf that shows all slots and
all cards in those slots.
Topology View
The Topology view shows all topologies or devices in a topology and any circuits
connecting the topologies and devices.
