The Cost of Studying in Canada for

International Students

Overview

If you’re from the U.S., Australia, or the U.K., or any other English-speaking country, you might
find that the cost of studying in Canada will be cheaper than at home.
Which is great! However, that might not be the case for those from other parts of the world.
Quite the opposite, actually.

However, for those of you who, despite the cost, are still interested by the amazing quality
of education and the wide array of programs available there, here‘s a quick breakdown of
how much money you‘ll need to study in Canada.

Where will you be spending your

Money?

Money. Perhaps one of the biggest obstacle for many international students. And
understandably so. Sure, you could try to support yourself by working while you’re stu-
dying in Canada. But given that you need to show the funds to even get your Visa, it‘s
important to become aware of how much you should budget for your studies.

Step 1
Now, here’s the right way to go about this. First off, who’s your sponsor? Because you
need to sit down and have an in-depth talk about how much studying abroad will cost
them. Not only do you need to take your tuition fees into account, but you need to con-
sider your living expenses as well.

Check out this chart to get a better idea:

Bonus Trick #1: Jobs as International Students in Canada

If you think you should work entry-level jobs because it ‘counts as work experience’, think
again. You should always earn professional experience that’s relevant to your field. And
you can start by going to your institution’s career support services center and ask for their
help. It’s a free resource! Or maybe you could approach the companies at job fairs within
your first month of studying.

Look up job fair dates on your academic calendar. And remember: do NOT settle for
anything less than a job you love and is relevant to your career path. Get as many inter-
views as you can until you get the job you want.

Visa and University Application fees

The bigger expenses are out of the way. So, let’s get back to the basics - Study Visa.
You absolutely need that to study in Canada. And fortunately, the costs involved won’t be
as grand as the aforementioned ones. Application fees are $150. That’s just for your Visa,
though. Don’t forget that colleges and universities also require a small fee. Between $70-150.

Bonus Trick #2: Ways to Lower your Tuition Fees

Get involved. Clubs and competitions can win you some cash to pay part of your tuition
fees. It won’t be much (around $5,000 on average) but it can help lessen the cost. Or try
applying for financial aid and scholarships. Other ways include getting your employer to
sponsor you or learning French. Indeed, fluency in the French language and taking your
courses in French, if available, can qualify you for an exemption fee where you can just pay
the Domestic Tuition Fees instead of the International one!
For more information on the topic, you NEED to schedule a meeting with your institution‘s
financial advisor.
