Methods of Solving a Kinetics

Problems
• Force Method (F,a)
• Energy Methods( work energy theorem-
F,v,x)
• Impulse Momentum method(Law of
conservation of momentum ie impulse
momentum principle-F,t,v)

Impulse Momentum Method(F,t,v)
• Derived from Newton's second law of motion.
• Involves main variables as Force(F)
,velocity(v),time(t).
• Linear momentum: qty of motion possessed
by a moving particle (denoted by ‘M’) and
equals to product of mass and velocity
• M=mv(unit kgm/s)
• Similarly angular momentum=m(ω)

Concept of Impulse
• IMPULSIVE force: A very large force acting for
a short duration of time. ( it causes sudden
impact on the body)
• Impulse: it is defined as the integration of the
product of impulsive forces and respective
short duration of time interval (I).
• Eg: force imparted by bat on a ball

Law of conservation of momentum
• A particle of a mass m and velocity v
possesses momentum of mv which is constant
if there is no external forces acting on it.

Impulse momentum principle
• NET impulsive force (along motion) acting in a
short duration of time dt on a particle of mass
m changes its velocity from v1 to v2 and
hence changes its momentum from M1 to M2.
• Impulse=change in momentum
