The Cardiovascular System

What is the cardiovascular system?

Cardiovascular
Cardio = heart (from the Greek
word ‘kardia’)

Vascular = vessels (from the Latin

word ‘vasculum’) ie. blood vessels
Blood vessels: veins vs arteries
Difference between the two?

● Most arteries carry blood that is oxygenated

(contains oxygen)
- shown in red

● Most veins carry blood that is deoxygenated

- shown in blue

● AAA - Arteries Always carry blood Away from the heart

● Veins carry blood to the heart

The Effects of Exercise on the
Cardiovascular System
• The Heart is a Cardiac Muscle:
1. Stroke volume increases - amount of blood pumped from the heart in
one beat
2. Cardiac output increases - total amount of blood pumped per minute
3. Resting heart rate decreases - as the heart will pump the blood required
in fewer beats.

• The more blood that can be pumped, the more

oxygen it can carry to the muscles that require
it.

Regular
Exercise =

Larger Stronger Heart

Resting Heart Rate
• avg. resting heart rate between 60 and 100 bpm

• People who exercise regularly might have a resting heart of

between
50-60 bpm.

Recently retired endurance cyclist Miguel Indurain

has a resting heart rate of 28 bpm.

Measure your heart rate over 15 seconds and

multiply it by 4 to find out your resting heart
rate.
