PLAN
Problem of the Study
Can the green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis) that are
exposed to UV radiation cause Tungro disease in Rice Plant
RC 222?
Objectives of the Study
General:
To evaluate the effect of ultraviolet light on Green
leafhopper (Cicadella viridis) in rice plant RC 222.
Specific:
1. To determine the growth of Rice Plant RI 222 exposed
to green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis) infected
with Tungro.
2. To observe the changes in the growth of Rice Plant
RC 222 based on the following characteristics: color
of leaves, height of the Rice Plant RC 222, and
number of affected leaves.
3. To compare the effect of green leafhopper (Cicadella
viridis) treated with UV radiation (treated) with
untreated green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis)
(control) in causing Tungro in rice plant RC 222.
Hypothesis:
Ho:The green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis) that are exposed
to UV radiation cannot cause Tungro disease in Rice Plant RC
222.
Ha:The green leafhopper(Cicadella viridis) that are exposed
to UV radiation can cause Tungro disease in Rice Plant RC 222.
Methodology
The researchers will use the following materials in
conducting the study: three (3) cylindrical container with net,
three (3) basin, six (6) clay pots, seventy two (72) seedlings of
RC 222, seven (7) green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis).
Step 1: Seed Preparation
The researchers will obtain a rice plant RC 222 from the
farmers of Taytay Goa, Camarines Sur. The obtained seeds will be
dried under the sun and will be soak on the water for 24 hours.
After 24 hours, 12 seedlings will be put in each pot. Wait until
the plant reaches the tillering stage.
Step 2: Green leafhopper
The Green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis) will be collected
from the rice field using bare hands and it will be placed inside
the jar containing tiny holes so that the air can pass through.
Put it in a place that should not be disturbed.
Step 3: Ultra Violet light and Cage
Prepare the three cylindrical cages and cover it with a net.
Purchase 40 watts ultra violet light on the internet.
Step 4: Experimental Set up
Prepare three set-ups that will be used in the study. Each
set-up will contain a basin with two pots that contains rice
plant RC 222. Collect seven (7) Green leafhopper (Cicadella
viridis). Put the green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis) inside the
set up that contains the plant that is affected by tungro virus
for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, transfer the green leafhopper
(Cicadella viridis) inside the cylindrical metal with a UV light.
Expose the green leafhopper (Cicadella viridis) for 6 hours.
After of the 6 hours exposure, remove the UV light and allow the
green leafhopper to stay inside the experimental set-up.Observe
the growth of the plants specially the color of the leaves for
about 1 weekand choose seven (7) observers to collect the data
that are needed. Lastly, compare the experimental set up to the
control set up.
Step 5: Gathering Data by the Respondents
Choose seven (7) observers that knows about farming to
observe the set-up. The observers are going to count the number
of leaves that are being affected by the Green leafhopper
(Cicadella viridis) per day for one week. The data gathered will
be recorded by the researchers.
Results and Discussion
The researchers will use weighted mean for the analysis
of gathered data particularly for the evaluation of the
effectiveness of UV radiation and to obtain the data
interpretation. Below is the formula used in the treatment
of statistical analysis.
