CHAPTER 1:INTRODUCTION
LITERATURE REVIEW
According to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_pepper
Peppers are native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South
America. Pepper seeds were imported to Spain in 1493 and then spread through Europe
and Asia. The mild bell pepper cultivar was developed in the 1920s, in Szeged,
Hungary.[5] Preferred growing conditions for bell peppers include warm, moist soil in a
temperature range of 21 to 29 °C (70 to 84 °F).

https://www.britannica.com/topic/sofrito
Bell pepper, (Capsicum annuum), pepper cultivar in the nightshade family
(Solanaceae), grown for its thick, mild fruits. Bell peppers are used in salads and in
cooked dishes and are high in vitamin A and vitamin C. The large furrowed fruits are
technically berries and can be green, red, yellow, or orange. Bell pepper plants are
grown as annuals, and the green varieties are harvested before the appearance of red
or yellow pigment—generally about 60–80 days after transplanting.

BACKGROUND

https://www.coursehero.com/file/56395501/CHAPTER-2docx/

Bell pepper is a solanaceous fruit which also belongs to the botanical

family.Solanacaceae. It belongs to the genus Capsicum.Bell pepper plants require a warm
season and a long time to acquire profitable fruits or yield. They are soft and can't
withstand low temperatures, but they can survive drought or prolonged shortage of
water.Sandy and sandy loam soils are ideal soil for bell pepper plants’ best growth and
development. (Thompson, 1957). They are not sensitive to soil acidity and can be planted
into soil with soil pH of as low as 5.5, but thrive best when soil pH ranges between 6.0
and 6.8. Capsicum Annuum, also known as bell pepper, is a native of the New World
tropics and is now extensively grown in warmer regions around the Earth. The plants are
more or less shrubby, with oval, entire leaves, and white greenish flowers with corolla
lobes, five stamens and pistils that ripen into a seeded berry with thick wall (Britannica,
1982).Peppers are very tender to frost, and may take as much as a hundred and fifteen
days from seed to harvest. They also have the same planting and culture as the tomatoes
and the only enemy of them is the frost or the climate that makes the crop unsafe to
them(Ogden S.,1971)

5
PROBLEM STATEMENT

The seedlings were planted at the agricultural station at one mile. The same
environment conditions are organic manure was used in four beds in the
greenhouse, using 2 different varieties of peppers to observe which varieties
developed and grow better.

6
AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this SBA is to :

● To ensure that I market my product locally, regionally, and internationally.

● To make a great profit
● To determine which pepper variety grows faster and more abundantly.

7
CHAPTER TWO:METHODOLOGY

Experimental Design

The investigation was carried out at 1 mile agriculture station on Wednesday 13th of

September 2023.We used a greenhouse to carry out the investigation measuring

25x55.Four beds were constructed labeled A,B,C,D. Two being Dark Green Variety on

the other Yellow Variety. Each variety was given equal amounts of water and pen

maure. This investigation was done to observe which of the variety developed faster and

had a better quality and quantity. In the investigation the irrigation system was timed by

using a timer which indicates when the water came on and off.

ACTIVITY DONE

1.TRANSPLANTING-For this activity, I gently used my fingers to pop the small plant
from the seedling tray, dug a hole with a trowel, and placed it inside. I buried it under dirt
after that. The purpose of this method is to make the soil better so that plants can grow.

10
2.MAKING BEDS AND DRAINS-In this activity, I Mark out the area where I will be
tilling the soil, then I use a rake to make it flat u top.

3.PLANTING OF SEEDS-In this activity ,Fertilized soil was placed in the tray. I then
used my finger to dig a hole in each box and added two seeds to each box.

11
4.IRRIGATION-For this task, I filled a container with water so I could water the plants.
There was enough water for each plant. This procedure was used to maintain the plants'
moisture levels.

12
MARKETING STRATEGIES

Competitive strategy is a long-term action plan of a company which is directed to gain

competitive advantage over its rivals after evaluating their strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats in the industry and compare it with your own.

Pricing Strategy is an approach taken by businesses to decide how much to charge

for their goods and services.

DATA COLLECTION

The data was collected in a tabulated format also by the use of a questionnaire.

CHAPTER FOUR : DISCUSSION

TABLE 1. NUMBER OF FLOWERS

For the first week there were no flowers on both green and yellow bell peppers.By the
sixth week the Green peppers grew 12 flowers and the yellow grew 5 flowers. In the
eighth week the number of flowers on both green and yellow bell peppers increased. The
green pepper went from 12 flowers to 24 and the yellow pepper went from 5 flowers to
13 flowers. In the twelfth week the Green variety was totaled at 45 flowers and the
yellow was 28 . The Green peppers produced more flowers than the yellow peppers.

TABLE 2 . NUMBER OF PLANTS SURVIVED

For the first week there were a total of 120 plants in both green and yellow peppers. In
week 2 to 3 the survival of both green and yellow peppers remained the same amount it
started with. By the fourth week green peppers lost one plant which decreased to 119
plants whereas the yellow peppers remain the same as 120 plants. The green peppers
decreased to 118 and the yellow peppers decreased to 119. On the 6th and final week both
remain the same.

TABLE 3. NUMBER OF LEAVES

From week 1 to 3 the number of leaves remains the same. They both had 8 leaves. By the
sixth week the green bell peppers had 16 leaves and the white peppers had 12 leaves. In
the eighth week both green and yellow peppers increased . On the tenth and final week
the green peppers had 24 leaves and the yellow peppers had 19. It is obvious that the
green bell peppers had more leaves than the yellow bell peppers.

17
TABLE 4. HEIGHT OF PLANTS(cm)

The first week the green peppers were 12 cm and the yellow peppers were 10 cm. By the
third week the green peppers were 18 cm and the yellow peppers were 15 cm. In the sixth
week the green pepper was taller than the yellow pepper in height. In week eight the
green peppers grew 36 cm and the yellow peppers grew to 31 cm. In the final, the final
results were the green peppers grew to 43 cm and the yellow peppers grew to 39 cm. I
can conclude that the green peppers grew taller than the yellow peppers.

TABLE 5. WEIGHT(lbs.)

In a week the green bell peppers weighed 80lbs and the yellow bell peppers weighed
70lbs. By week number 2 the green bell peppers gained 10lbs bringing the total wait to
90lbs and the yellow bell peppers gained 18 lbs bringing the total weight to 88lbs. I can
safely conclude from the table that green bell peppers weigh more than yellow bell
peppers.

CHAPTER 5

Conclusion

It's reasonable to say that participating in this school-based

assessment was a great experience.Although, the intense heat of the sun made it
unpleasant for me to work in 1 mile. However, perseverance ultimately pays off.

Recommendations

I suggest that Portsmouth Secondary School construct a more attractive green house on
campus, along with new equipments .Additionally, complimentary transportation should
be arranged so that students can travel to One Mile.

Limitations

One of the limitations was that there was insufficient time to fully complete this School
Based Assessment.

Comparison

● Projected income for Variety 1 vs Variety 2

According to the table showing predicted profits for both green and yellow peppers
grown, the green peppers anticipated making $1232 after harvesting 154 pounds of
peppers priced at $8per pound.A price of $8 per pound was fixed at $1120 after collecting
140 pounds of peppers. The difference totaled $112.The reason for this is that the green
pepper produces more than the yellow pepper.

● The actual income for Variety 1 vs variety

The table below shows ,it's obvious that 170 lbs of peppers were harvested in the green
variety ,which equates $1530 at $9.00 per pound. The yellow variety was 158 pounds of
harvest which cost $1422 at $9 a pound. The green variety was profitable since it
contained more peppers than the yellow variety.

● The Actual Expenditure Variety 1 vs Variety 2

Both varieties had a profit of $1047.20 since they used the same materials.
25

Surplus

The surplus was calculated by minusing the expenditure from the income.
The projected surplus for bothe bell peppers was amounted $910.00.
For the actual surplus for the bell peppers grown in the green variety was totaled,$482.80
( $1530-$1047.20) was made,while yellow peppers had a profit of $374.80 (
$1530-$1047) .In total ,the projected surplus for both green and yellow bell peppers was
910.00 while the actual amounted to a total surplus of 857.60.
