introduction
Name of project: Cultivation of leafy vegetables {Ochro}

Common name of crop: Ochro

4

Botanical name: Abelmoschus esculents

Bassicaoleracea {cabbag } has become an important food crop plant which is used for its large
storage reserves, which are stored over the winter in its leaves. It is rich in essential nutrients
including vitamins ‘C’. Also bassicaoleracea is also used for medicinal used for cleansing
purposes and treatment of glaucoma and pneumonia.

Cabbage is generally grown for its densely leaved heads. Plants perform best when grown in
well-drained soil in a location that receives full sun. Different varieties prefer different soil
types, ranging from lighter sand to heavier clay, but all prefer fertile ground with a ph between
6.0 and 6.8. For optimal growth, there must be adequate levels of nitrogen in the soil, especially
during the early head formation stage, and sufficient phosphorus and potassium during the
early stages of expansion of the outer leaves. Growers normally place plants 30 to 61 cm (12 to
24 inches) apart. Closer spacing reduces the resources available to each plant (especially the
amount of light) and increases the time taken to reach maturity.

Location: KuruKuru Co-Operative College Durban backlands.

Duration of project: 12 weeks.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES.

PREPERATION OF SEED BOX- Sandy soil, clay soil and organic fertilizer are mixed together and
placed in a seed box. The seeds are placed in a line order from one end of the box to the other.
The box is then watered and placed in a well shaded cool environment.
8

WATERING- Seeds were watered daily so as to have healthy plants.

TINNING OUT- seedlings were removed from a clustered box to another box or to the seed
beds.

TRANSPLANTING- this is the removal of seedlings from seed box area with some soil around
the root to seed beds.

LAND CLEARING-weeds and other obstacles were removed from the cultivation area .

WEEDING- This is the removing of weeds and other unwanted plants from the cultivation area.

MAKING OF BEDS AND DRAINS- Drains were dug using a shovel with a measurement of 12
inches wide and 5 inches depth. Beds were first made by forking up the soil, it was formed with
measurement 4 foot wide and 6 foot length.

FORKING AND CHIPPING- This was done by the use of heavy duty fork and cutlass to loosen
and for upturning the soil making it suitable and easy for planting.

PLANTING OF SEEDLINGS- These were planted with the measurement of 12 centimeters rows
and 12 centimeters between rows.

WATERING/IRRIGATION- Plants were watered twice daily to maintain healthy growth and this
was done either using garden length hose and also a bucket.

FERTILIZER APPLICATION- Before planting, organic manure was mixed into the soil by using a
cutlass. One week after planting more organic manure was added around the roots of the
plants. Fertilizer was added to the soil in solid form.

WEED CONTROL- weeds were controlled by hand pulling and using cutlass.

INSECTACIDE/ FUNGICIDE-pesticide was sprayed using knapsack sprayer. It was applied after
seedlings were planted.

PEST AND DISEASES- the cricket, a biting and chewing pest, would eat the roots of the seedlings
from under the soil which kills the plant.

HARVESTING- Harvesting was done by the 12th week after transplanting. The cabbages were
harvested usinga cutlass to remove the roots from the soil.
