CASE STUDY: AMNESTY
Amnesty India has lost the backing of prominent Indian human rights campaigners following charges of caste discrimination
and harassment within the organisation. Staff were humiliated, ill-treated, and discriminated upon, according to the charges,
due to their caste, a Hindu social stratification.
In 2019, one of it's two activists stepped down following AI dropped her employment discrimination and mistreatment claim.
The other reported that she was pressured to leave once her project has been completed, a few weeks after her claim of
hierarchy discrimination been disregarded as unfounded.
This follows as Amnesty International put out a report two years ago, defining a "toxic" workplace ethos in the
workplace, citing pervasive intimidation, harassment, public embarrassment, as well as other authority abuses. When

A total of 32 Indian attorneys and civil rights activists have written to Amnesty International's secretary general in
London, demanding an impartial inquiry further into workforces' allegations. Many letters have been shown to the

Amnesty India (AI) had initiated an investigation, which had then be chaired by an independent investigator, into in
the charges created by two top activists. They said that they were "deeply troubled" to the media.
In India, where 200 million individuals belong to lower caste, disadvantaged communities, caste-based discrimination
is banned. However, prejudice exists, especially those in rural areas. In 2019, violence occurred after large numbers of
Dalit’s, once termed as "untouchables," staged a major rally to draw attention to the injustice they experience.

No one is immune to discrimination in today's modern world. Discrimination is described as a negative


attitude against a person or group of people based on their gender, ethnicity, religion, or personality
characteristics traits. Workplace discrimination is characterised by ethnicity, sexuality, disabilities, gender,
youth, creed, national background, race, and relationship status. It can also emerge when it comes to job
norms and circumstances, such as pay, unpaid overtime, paid holidays, and etc.
This could be said knowingly or inadvertently by the discriminator. Workplace stress might result from the
negative psychological repercussions of such words on the impaired person's thinking. Discrimination
against disabled persons is thus detrimental to the company's growth. When a supervisor discriminates
against a disabled employee or client, it demoralises the targeted individual, preventing them from working
at their best and jeopardising the company's success.
