Local manufacture of electrodes achieved

4TH OCTOBER 2002

Gauteng-based Oesa has achieved 100% local manufacture of

coated
welding electrodes at its Spartan factory.

The company manufactures a wide range of welding electrodes

using
local steel for core wire and a large percentage of locally-
sourced
materials for the coatings.

Development work is undertaken at both the company's factory and

by
its overseas associates, Oerlikon, giving Oesa the capability of
making almost any electrode for any application. If the company
does not have an electrode in its current programme, it can obtain
an overseas formula or develop it here to meet customer
requirements.

The company keeps abreast of the latest trends and developments

within the steel and other industries to ensure it develops
electrodes
specifically to meet diverse needs. An example of this
is the
development of the Cromanite stainless-steel prototype
electrode.
The company also developed a 308H stainless steel
electrode and
further refined the formula to match the
characteristics of its
Supranox stainless steel range.

Oesa's size and flexibility favours the development and

of electrodes for niche markets as opposed to

mass-produced
electrodes for general purpose welding.

Having achieved 100% local production, the company says it is

committed to increasing the range to ensure that it has available,
specialised electrodes for specific requirements.

In other developments Dorbyl Heavy Engineering in Vereeniging,

Gauteng, has placed another order with Oesa for the supply of
flux-
wire cord in the welding of headgear winders and dragline
bases.

Dorbyl is Using Oesa's Fluxofilcord 16 wire which is ideal for

precision-welding in all positions except vertical down.

This seamless, copper-coated flux-cored wire offers good bead

appearance, easy slag removal, stable arc and minimal splatter for
faster welding, says the company.

Fluxifilcord 16 can be used with carbon dioxide (CO2) shielding

gas.
