IRIS Assignment
1. Name at least three items that could be considered AT and describe how those devices could
support a student with a disability in the classroom.
Non-slip materials
Non-slip materials such as Dycem mats help stabilize items or prevent
students from sliding off of seats
Audio books
Recorded audio versions of books can help students who have vision
impairment, difficulty focusing on print, difficulty holding a book, or are
always moving.
Joystick input device
These are great for students with limited mobility who still need to use a
computer. Combined with an on-screen keyboard, students can move the
cursor mouse more easily and type while only using one hand.
2. Explain two reasons why it is necessary to consider AT for students with disabilities.
ATs can help students communicate better in a classroom and participate in academic and
social activities.
5. List three outcomes the Implementation Team can determine by evaluating a student’s
assistive technology.
Is the AT providing adequate support?
Is additional training required?
Does a new AT need to be used?
6. Imagine you are a seventh-grade general education language arts teacher and a student in
your class has an upcoming IEP meeting. What types of information should you gather
ahead of time to contribute to the discussion of the student’s AT needs? Name at least four.
Level of function
Strengths
Needs
Previous accommodations that have worked or failed
Use of AT devices and services
7. During the meeting suggested in the example above, the IEP team recommends AT for the
student. As a general education teacher, describe your role in the AT implementation and
evaluation processes.
Understand the student’s needs: know their strengths and weaknesses
Encourage AT Usage: learn how to use ATs, incorporate them regularly into class,
familiarize the whole class with it
Collaborate and Communicate: seek support from knowledgeable individuals, find
stories/reviews of how ATs have been used in other classrooms, communicate with other
teachers and families about whether or not the AT is helpful
