Family vocabulary, possessive
Target Language:
adjectives: his/her, present continuous
Duration: 45 minutes
Total: 45 minutes.
2 Procedure
A. Warmer
To practise using possessive adjectives make your students do a circular oral drill. First,
you ask the first student “What’s your mother’s name?” The students answers: “Her
name is ….” and asks the same question. If someone hasn’t got a sibling or other family
member, teach them to answer: “I haven’t got one.” When the circular exercise is
finished, the teacher asks about other family members in the same way.
Explain to your students in a simple manner that we add –ing to verbs when we want
to describe what a person is doing now or today. Revise using verb be in singular and
plural and use hand(s) for indicating different persons. After that ask one student what
his/her mother is doing. Help him answer and ask another student the same question.
Then repeat the exercise by asking about other family members.
Since the students in the classroom are almost all doing the same thing it is more
instructive to ask them what they aren’t doing for the time being. Their answer can vary
from common ones to funny or silly ones i.e. “I’m not eating worms.” etc.
In this exercise students are supposed to write names of their family members in the
family tree. In the lowest part they should add brothers, sisters or cousins and their
names. If they want they can add some more boxes and write in them or leave some
empty if they want.
In the next exercise they draw faces of their family members and write about their
names beginning with His/Her. Then they write their age.
Introduce several main activity verbs by miming them and making your students guess
what their meaning is. Then point to the icons in the third exercise and ask them to say
the base form of the verb and then –ing form, i.e. play, playing. After that, tell them to
draw lines to connect icons with the written verb and finally, let them write –ing form.
The verbs with spelling problems (omitted e) are already written form them, but let
them notice the difference and create the rule.
