What I Need to Know
A healthier life is achieved when you have a safe environment. Identifying the
problems and knowing all the issues in your environment can make yourself aware
and prepared in battling whatever obstacles you might be facing in your everyday
life. Everyone must be sensitive to what is happening around us. Life is not only
about playing computer games, keeping updated on social media, buying the stuff
you need ONLINE or in the market; and/or making FACEBOOK friends. It must be
also about the current situation we are in.
Being aware of the nature of environment issues might give you some ideas, skills
and knowledge to make yourself and your family safe, thus, making yourself a better
you to win the battles and being a successful individual who can contribute to nation
building as well.
In this module, you will learn the nature of environmental issues that will open your
eyes in the different threats and destruction in the community. (H9CE-lb-d-11).

Nature of Environmental
1 Issues
Natural Resources and biodiversity explain why the Philippines is a rich country.
Putting our home into the rare list of nations with both a hotspot and mega diversity
area for over 6000 plant species and also numerous animal species inhabited this
area. However, despite of their richness and massive importance to the environment
and humans as well, the forests face continuing destruction and possible extinction.
Even the corona virus disease which made people in the whole world turned our lives
into a new normal is somehow considered environmental issue for it is continually
reducing economic activity, thus, this pandemic is one of the unexpected
environmental consequences.

What’s New
In your Health notebook, draw your own community environment by describing its
physical surrounding.
7
What is It
The lesson will make you aware of the most pressing problems of the environment
today. Let’s narrow them down:
DEFORESTATION
This is the destruction and devastation of big areas in the forest. The Philippines is
losing our forests fast. (SOURCE: FAO-FRA. 2010). The main cause of deforestation
is agriculture and building of infrastructure while the main cause of forest
degradation is illegal logging.
➢ The Philippines is among the countries with the fastest loss of forest around
the world.
➢ It ranks 4th among the world’s top 10 most threatened forest hotspots.
➢ If the 157,400 ha. Per year rate of deforestation continues, our remaining
forest cover will be wiped out in less than 40 years.
8
FLASH FLOOD
It is a sudden flood of great volume, usually caused by a heavy rain. It begins within
6 hours, and often times 3 hours of the heavy rainfall (or other causes). It can be
caused by a number of things, but it is most often due to extremely heavy rainfall
from thunderstorm. Sometimes, this can also occur due to DAM or Levee Breaks,
and/or mudslide (Debris Flow) and/or rock fragments.
In the Philippines, illegal logging is another factor believed to have contributed to the
staggering death tool in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro during typhoon
Sendong in 2011. Many people were swept away by huge logs that rolled down from
the denuded mountains.
ILLEGAL MINING
It is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth,
an ore body, lode vein seam, or reef, which forms the mineralized package of
economic interest to the miner in the absence of land rights, mining license,
exploration or mineral transportation permit or any document that could legitimate
the on-going operations.
The Mining Act of 1995 aimed to help the domestic mining industry regain its
competitiveness by allowing companies (contractors) to obtain an exploration permit
for a specific area for up to four years.
9
The Philippines is one
of the most
mineralized countries
in the world with a
mineral wealth
estimated of 840
billion US dollars, of
which most of the
mineral reserves are
still untapped.
SOIL EROSION
It happens when soil and rock are moved from one place to another by wind, water
and gravity. The soil erosion problem in the Philippines is one of the most serious
forms of land degradation, which generally affects the population and the
environment. This problem was recognized as early as 1930s when it served as a
precursor to the reforestation program of then Bureau of Forest Development.
10
Causes of Soil Erosion:
➢ Deforestation
➢ Building of roads
➢ Agriculture
➢ Urbanization
➢ Mining
➢ Spill of oil from equipment faults/tankers
➢ From human activities on land
➢ From water sports
➢ From drilling works carried out in the sea
➢ From nature like water runoff and rainfall intensity; the slope of the land, soil
texture and win
It is a significant problem throughout the world. It has been acknowledged that 27%
of the world’s reefs have been affected Gardener (2003) pointed out that:
Coral Reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems built from calcium carbonate
secreted by corals. It can be categorized into the following coral cover estimate thru
line intercept transect method.
The Philippines is rich in biodiversity and endemism with many natural resources
that contribute towards the economy and local communities. Its shorelines and
coastal habitats are of particular importance with fisheries, agriculture and industry
which are all dependent on the country’s waterways and marine environment.
Threats to habitat and biodiversity loss come from various practices, including land
clearing, unsustainable fishing, and pollution.
11
POLLUTION
It is any alteration of the physical, chemical and biological properties of water, air
and/or land resources.
• Air Pollution means any alteration of the physical, chemical and biological
properties of the atmospheric air.
• Water Pollution means any alteration of the physical, chemical and biological
or radiological properties of a body of water resulting in the impairment of the
purity or quality.
• Noise Pollution is the excessive sound that causes hearing loss, stress, fatigue,
irritability, tension, headaches and high blood pressure.
• Soil Pollution is chiefly caused by chemicals in pesticides, such as poisons
that are used to kill agricultural pests like insects and herbicides that are
used to get rid of weeds. Soil pollution results from:
12
Noise Pollution Soil Pollution
OIL SPILL
It is an accidental release of oil into a body of water and land, as form of a tanker
offshore drilling rig, or underwater pipeline, often presenting a hazard to marine life
and the environment. Spilled oil on land prevents water absorption by the soil, spills
on agricultural locations or grasslands have the effect of choking off plant life. If a
spill occurs in these environment, the highest response priorities are to prevent oil
from leaching into groundwater or entering waterways as run-off, and to return the
soil to productive use as quickly as possible.
In the Philippines,
Province of Guimaras
Island suffered worst
oil spill. An oil tanker
hired by Petron
Corporation sank off
the coast, spilling more
than 2.1 million liters
of bunker fuel.
13
You have here a quick survey of the characteristics of your environment at present.
Describe the surrounding where you and your family live in. Read carefully and
understand the process of self-estimation in assessing your own environment.
Copy the table in your Health notebook. Read each environmental problem and put
a check ( √ ) mark on corresponding column that best fits your assessment.

Degradation
When you experience little problem on it and your community is still 90%
enjoying its safety net for you because you are locally governed and
aided.
When you experience major problem in your environment, and this 75%
is one of the issues in your hometown, and your community is not
enjoying the surrounding. Everyday life of your family is affected
because of this problem.
When you experience a great problem on this issue, and community 50% and
leaders in your place have already shown action of protest on it ( if below
you have seen it posting this issue on FB/or you have heard your
elders discussing this issue for a long time already); or with the use
of other actions like using media (TV/Radio)to air this problems.
14
What’s More
Based on the previous activities that you did, you managed to identify and describe
the environmental problems in your community. This time challenge yourself by
engaging in this another task.
Prepare your Health notebook so you can continue compiling your answers in all
activities in this module and for the next modules.
Read each sentence and complete the missing letter in the box below to its
corresponding number. Let’s go down and try to fill up and complete the terminology

problems in your community, the following tasks will show what you can do in real
life scenario by transferring your acquired knowledge from the previous activities.
Make a “RAP SONG LYRICS” (English, Tagalog or any Filipino Dialect you are
comfortable with and use it in expressing your thought). The content of your song
lyrics must be concerning what you have identified as the major environmental issue
in your place. Write it in your Health notebook.
17
Assessment
Summing up what you have acquired in the previous activities, it is time to asses to
what extent you have gained knowledge in identifying/describing the nature of
environmental problems in the community.
Fill in the blanks. Get your HEALTH notebook and supply THE answer to the
