ACTIVITY 1: PROPERTIES OF LIQUID

A. Direction: Explain the phenomena stated below. write your answer in the space provided. (5pts each)

1. Your arms feel cool when alcohol evaporates from your skin
Alcohol is very volatile, meaning it evaporates quickly. Going form liquid to vapor requires heat
to be added to alcohol. Heat is extracted from your skin. That causes a local drop in temperature
where it evaporates, making you feel cold at the spot.
2. On warm day, water droplets form on the outer side of the bottle of a carbonated beverage.
When warm air reaches cold surface it reaches its dew point, and it condenses.

B. Direction: Describe how intermolecular forces of attraction affect each of the following properties of
liquid. . (5pts each)

3. Viscosity
The viscosity will increase as the intermolecular tensions increase.
4. Surface tension
The higher the surface tension, means the liquid has a stronger intermolecular force.
5. Capillary action
Capillary action allows water move upward due to surface tension of the water molecules and
intermolecular forces between the water and surrounding surface.
6. Boiling point
The stronger the intermolecular forces, the lower the vapor pressure of the substance and the
higher the boiling point.
