Sandiaga calls on BidaraCina residents 'not to be selfish' to help mitigate flooding

The Jakarta Post
Jakarta | Fri, February 9, 2018 | 02:45 pm

Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno has called on the flood-affected residents of
Bidara Cina in East Jakarta to hand over their lands to the city administration to help move
forward with a flood mitigation project.
“The residents should not be selfish, because the project could bring a positive impact
to the city,” Sandiaga said at City Hall on Friday, adding that he would approach the residents

The project involves drilling a tunnel that would connect the Ciliwung River to the
East Flood Canal, which would ease the severe flooding that occasionally occurred in Bidara
Cina.
The severe inundation that hit the capital in the past week has caused thousands of
Jakarta residents, particularly those in East and South Jakarta, to move temporarily to
evacuation shelters. Over 500 Bidara Cina residents have moved to the camps.
In 2015, the Bidara Cina residents whose lands were affected by the flood mitigation
project filed a lawsuit against Gubernatorial Decree No. 2779/2015 that expanded the project.
The residents won their legal battle the following year, when the Jakarta State Administrative
Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, citing a lack of good administrative principles as one of
the reasons for the ruling. (vny)

The 1930s, Chester F Carlson was working in the patents department of a large
electronics firm in New York City. One of the major problems in his work was the length of
time and expense involve in getting patents copied; patents were lengthy legal documents,
and the only ways to get them copied were to take them to a typist or to a photographer.
Either ways of copying patents took a lot of time and cost a lot of money.
He came up with the idea for a machine that would copy documents quickly and
efficiently. He researched the idea in the library and then worked over a three-year period on
developing a machine that used a light, an electrostatically charged plate, and powder to
duplicate image on paper. The result of this work was a machine that produced the first
xerographic copy on October 22, 1938. He named the process “Xerox”, which is derived
from a word meaning “dry writing”.
Carlson felt that he had a good idea, one that would be extremely helpful in the
business world. He tried to sell his idea to a number of large corporations, but they were not
terribly interested in his machine. He was able to get some help in developing the machine
from a nonprofit institute, and a few years later he sold the machine to a small family-owned
company. This small company grew into a giant Xerox Corporation.

Questions 11 to 12 are based on the text below

Your heart muscle is a very efficient pump that delivers blood, oxygen and nutrients to
your body.
The heart has four chambers—two on the right and two on the left. Both sides of the
heart work together. The right side pumps blood into the lungs and the left side pumps blood
into the organs and tissues of your body.
After your blood flows through the body, its
life-giving oxygen and nutrients have been depleted. To replenish the oxygen and revitalize
the blood, it must pass through the heart and then into the lungs again.
Right side: First the oxygen-depleted blood enters the heart through two large veins, the
inferior and superior vena cava, and then flows into the right atrium. From the right atrium, it
passes through the tricuspid valve and then into the right ventricle. The blood is then pumped
through the pulmonary valve and into the lungs.
Once in the lungs, carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is added to the blood.
Left side: The pulmonary vein empties oxygen-rich blood, from the lungs into the left
atrium. From here, the blood flows into your left ventricle through the open mitral valve and
finally, it is pumped through the aortic valve into the aorta—the blood vessel that feeds all of
the other parts of your body.
When the ventricles are full, the mitral and tricuspid valves close. This prevents blood
from flowing backward into the atria while the ventricles contract (squeeze) or “pump”. This
pattern is repeated continuously throughout your life, causing blood to flow continuously to
the heart, lungs and other parts of the body.
Adopted from: http://www.capitalcardiology.com/heartwork.htm (13th November 2011)

11. What is pump?

A. The process of clogging the tricuspid valve and then into the right ventricle.
B. The passes of food through the esophagus into the stomach.
C. The process of preventing blood from flowing backward into the atria while
the ventricles contract
D. The process of flowing into your right ventricle through the open mitral valve.
E. The process of pumping through the lungs and into the pulmonary valve

12. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the text?
A. The pulmonary vein empties oxygen-rich blood, from the lungs into the left
atrium.
B. When the ventricles are full, the mitral and tricuspid valves open.
C. After your blood flows through the body, its life-giving oxygen and nutrients have
been depleted.
D. From the right atrium, it passes through the tricuspid valve and then into the right
ventricle.

2012 Film Review

2012 is Roland Emmerich’s film which uses the Mayan Calendar and other end-of-days
prophecies for their doomsday scenario. It imagines the world coming to an end in
2012.
2012 film brings off a series of wonders. The movie hits its peak early on. It stars when
Cusack drives a limo through the streets of Los Angeles as freeway and skyscrapers
crumble all around him from the shock of a 10.5 earthquake. The preposterous flying
sequence is equally thrilling. The climax occurs aboard the giant ark. When an
equipment malfunction almost threatens the entire mission.
Unfortunately, the crucial sequence is not filmed or edited with the requisite
clarity. In 2012 film, Emmerich leaves us befuddled as to exactly what is happening to
whom. However, Emmerich’2012 deserves credit for offbeat casting. Cusack supplies
his trademark hangdog charm. McCarthy has perhaps his best role ever as Peet’s cocky.
Danny Glover lends dignity to the role of the tormented president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as
the chief scientist, brings a moving sense of anguish to a stock role. Platt has fun
playing the villain of the piece, and Woody Harrelson also chews the scenery as a bug-
eyed radio prophet trying to warn his listeners about Armageddon.
All in one, 2012’s cinematography, production design and visual effects are
award-worthy. Music also propels the movie. It presents American Idol runner-up,
Adam Lambert, who provides a rousing anthem over the end credits.

The following text is for questions 39 to 42.

Many people live in dense, dirty areas where narrow, shallow rivers are located. There
is a potential risk of flooding which might be caused by both humans and nature. Human bad
habits are some main causes of flooding. People throw garbage and trash in the river. The
flow is blocked and conseguent the water spills into the land.
In addition, natural phenomena may result in dangerous floods. Naturally, floods
happen when rain is extremely heavy, over an unusually long period of time. In some cases,
areas that experience a great deal of snow in winter are prone to springtime flooding when the
snow and ice melt, especially if the thaw is relatively sudden. Rainfall and melted snow can
sometimes combine to cause floods.
A unique combination of factors sometimes also causes floods. For instance,
whenever the ocean is at high tide, a low-lying coastal area is at risk of flooding.
Exceptionally high tides may be attributed to storms, caused by a combination of factors, like
low barometric pressure and high winds.
Finally, floods can occur regardless of the climate. Examples are volcanic heating and
rapid melting of a snow pack atop a volcanic mountain or under a glacier, or even failures of
natural or man-made dams, and tsunamis, seismic waves on the sea or large lakes that are
caused by earthquakes. (PR/100/Gg)
