1. Name four highly disruptive digital technologies.

Give an
example of one disruption for each technology

 Streaming Media Services: streaming services came to change the

way people view media content. When in the past you had to either
rent or buy VHS, DVD’s and Blueray’s in order to see your favorite
shows, streaming allows you to view from the comfort of your TV,
tablet, smartphone, or computer. It bypasses the wait time of receiving
the movie or show by mail or having to go out and buy it. Today
practically every movie or tv show is available on at least one of the
many streaming sites. Examples of streaming services are Netflix,
Amazon Prime, Hulu. Different TV networks also have their apps where
customers can stream original content.
 E-readers and E-reader apps: When E-readers came out, they
fundamentally changed the way book stores operated and disrupting
the market in their course. Book stores had to change their market
strategy in order to keep up with the times, and even so the only major
surviving one had to close many of their stores. E-readers provided
book lovers with immediate gratification by allowing them to purchase
and receive a book with a click. E-reader apps made it even easier, as
you don’t have to purchase the reader itself but can receive the books
in your iPad, tablets, smartphones, or computers. The most known e-
reader is the Amazon Kindle, and the accompanying kindle app, but
there are others like the Barnes and Noble Nook. Apple also has an e-
reader app, iBooks.
 Cloud Computing: The cloud is made up of large groups of servers
that are usually housed in data centers running software that can
distribute processing over their network across multiple servers
(Johnson). Cloud computing has allowed smaller businesses to thrive in
the technology-driven area. Whereas before businesses would have to
spend great amounts in order to buy IT equipment, cloud hosting
services are much cheaper and also provide the expertise. Salesforce
is an example of Cloud computing in the business world. It is a CRM
(Customer Relationship Management) platform that uses cloud-based
for sales, service, and marketing. This is one of the programs that we
use at my work and it has totally changed the way other programs talk
to each other.
 Mobile Payment: Cash is almost obsolete these days with not only
debit and credit cards, but also digital forms of payment. Paypal, Apple
Pay, Square, to name a few, are different types of mobile payment or
apps that allow people to purchase without exchanging money. Some
vendors even have their own apps to receive payment, where you just
scan your smartphone with the vendor app and your credit card that
was previously registered gets charged once a month for all your
transactions.

2. Review the 9 Successful Digital Distruptions Examples slideshow

found at the following web site:
https://www.itbusinessedge.com/slideshows/9-successful-digital-
disruption-examples.html
a. Which of the disruptions resonated best with you and your
lifestyle? Explain
A successful Meeting in the Digital Workplace was the disruption that
most resonated with me. I have the ability to work remotely when
needed due to all these tools. I had a baby last month and the last
couple of weeks of my pregnancy I stayed home but didn’t have to use
PTO or start my maternity leave early. I was able to work seamlessly
just as if I had been at the office.
b. Which of the disruptions was the most surprising to you, why?
Integration of the supply network with the use of cloud computing-
based tools was the most surprising to me. It has reduced the labor
needed to make design changes on sophisticated machinery and parts,
and has also increased the speed in the product development process.

c. Rank the order of the disruptions in the order of their

importance to you

1. Adoption of the platform economy

2. Replacing older tools
3. Big Data, more effective use of data
4. Digital workplace
5. Improving Medical procedures
6. Real time visualization
7. Cloud computing integrating the supply network
8. Disintermediation
9. Digital disruption and customer interaction
