Bus topology

Introduction

Bus topology is one of the simplest and most common LAN topologies. In bus topology all
nodes are connected to one cable called as the ‘backbone’. All nodes can communicate with
the others through this bus. When the signal is sent from the source it will pass to the other
nodes or users, but only targeted receiver will receive it when the IP address matches the
targeted receiver IP address, or it will reject the signal.

Advantages

1. Bus topology is easy to setup and design, just need to connect a cable to the nodes.
2. compared to the other topologies it requires the least use of cabling.
3. Cost efficient, just have to buy the cables.
4. It very easy to expand, only joining cables together.

Disadvantages

1. The whole network is based on one cable(backbone), if any damages happens to it the
whole network will fall.
2. The efficiency of network decreases when the number of nodes increases.
3. when the network falls down it is hard to classify the problem.

Recommendation

Star topology would be the best choice for block B 1st floor. Basically, this floor has 6
computers only which means that there will be no worries about the network traffic and fast
performance. In star topology if any workstation falls, it wont effect the other workstation
which is very important, especially for this floor because the workstations in the technical
team room needs to be working always at good performance. In star topology it is easy to set
up, troubleshoot any issues in the network and to modify like adding, moving, or removing
nodes.
