Answer ALL six Questions; Total 65 marks.

Please write all the steps clearly as they carry marks. Total time: 2 hours.
Gravitational constant: G= 6.67300 x 10- 1 I m 3 kg-] S-2. Gravity constant: g=9.8m/s 2

1. (10 marks) Fig. 1 shows two boxes with masses ml=3kg and m2=2kg. They are connected
via a massless cord on two frictionless planes. The angles of the inclines are: 8 1=30° and
82=60". The pulley is also frictionless. What is the tension in the cord?

2. (10 marks) In Fig. 2, a slab of mass ml=40kg rests on a frictionless floor, and an object of
mass 1112= lOkg rests on top of the slab. Between ml and m2, the static friction coefficient is
0.6 and the kinetic friction coefficient is 0.4. m2 is pulled by a horizontal force F= lOON. What
are the accelerations of ml and m2?

3. (l0 marks) In Fig. 3, block 1 of m[=6.6kg is at rest on a frictionless surface. Block 2 of m2

moves with speed V 2i and collides with ml elastically. After collision, the two blocks move
with velocities of the same magnitude but in opposite directions. Find m2.

4. (10 marks) Let's consider a homogeneous thin ring of mass M and radius R in free space,
as shown in FigA.
(a) What gravitational force does it exert on a particle of mass m located on the ring's central
axis a distance x from the ring center?
(b) If the particle 111 falls from rest as a result of the attraction, while M remains static. What
is the speed of 111 when it passes through the center of the ring? (hint: consider the potential
energy change.)

5. (10 marks) Two sinusoidal waves, YI(X,t) and Y2(X,t), are of the same amplitude and
wavelength, travelling together along x axis. Their resultant standing )'\lave is shown twice in
Fig.S, as the antinode A travels from an extreme upward displacement to an extreme
downward displacement in 6.0ms. The distance between two tick marks on the x axis is 10cm.
Let the equation for one of the two waves be of the form y(x,t)=Ymsin(kx+wt). In the equation
of the other wave, what are (a) Ynh (b) k, (c) ill, and (d) the sign in front of ill?

6. (15 marks) A ball is moving on a flat surface with initial linear speed Vo and zero initial
angular speed. The coefficient of kinetic friction of the surface is /l. The kinetic friction
produces a torque that causes an angular acceleration of the ball. When the linear speed of the
ball V cum has decreased enough and the angular speed ill has increased enough, the ball starts

rolling without sliding. The ball's rotational inertial about its center is: 3. mr 2 , with r being
5
the radius of the ball.
(a) During the sliding, what is the ball's linear acceleration?
(b) During the sliding, what is the angular acceleration?
(c) What is the time interval for the sliding process?
(d) How far does the ball travel during the sliding process?
(e) What is the linear speed of the ball when the rolling stalts?
