Personal Philosophy of Special Education 1

What is the purpose of special education? The purpose of special education is to enable

students to grow to their fullest potential by providing a free appropriate public education

design to fit their unique needs.

My philosophy of special education is, I believe that all students have a right to an

appropriate education. I believe that it is important for professionals in the field to get to know

their students' specific needs. It is also vital for teachers to be educated in the practices in order

to deliver more efficient and effective instruction. Special education professionals should be

well prepared to collaborate with other professionals and work as a team to design a plan for the

individual's learning. My experience with working with special needs students as an Instructional

Assistant has made me realize that learning does not have to be a “one size fits all.” All children

are different and unique, children have different styles of learning. In this field professionals

need to have a high level of patience and understanding as well as be flexible. Another important

factor is that teachers in this profession need to establish a positive relationship with students and

their families.

As an aspiring teacher, I believe Special education teachers have the responsibility to

provide a positive and safe environment, making sure that students of special needs have the

support, tools, and services that they need to succeed in school. Special education teachers

should provide a learning environment that is appropriate for all learning styles, ensuring that

they are using the correct accommodations for their learners.

Special education Instruction may include the use of specialized materials, equipment,

services, or instructional strategies. Teachers and collaborative team members need to assess and

individualize a plan for the appropriate strategies and tools used in a student's learning. In the

field of special education there is much more to be learned than academics, social

development as well as cognitive development are vital for students with special needs. I believe

that one main purpose of special education is to teach necessary skills to become a contributing

member of society. Essentially we are supporting students for success in highschool and beyond.

In the future I hope that I will continue to learn and grow. I will apply what I have

learned in my classroom and my personal teaching style. I will continue with an open mind. I

will ask for help when needed and use resources provided to support my students and myself.

There is always room for improvement.
