Giraffe

Giraffes are the endemic mammal of Africa. They are the tallest living animal on
earth which instantaneously noticeable by its outstandingly long neck. Giraffes were
also known as camelopardalis by the Roman, which literally means spotted camel.
Their scientific name is Girrafa camelopardalis.

The male giraffe is able to reach a height almost 5,5 meters, while the female one
has slightly smaller sizes. The giraffe’s front and hind legs are nearly same in length
however the body slopes downwards from the shoulder to the tail.

Giraffes regularly have a couple of short horns between the ears which are covered
with skin and hair. Several giraffes also have a third horn on the forehead in smaller
size. Their nostrils are prominent and are able to be closed at their will like those of a
camel.

Giraffes have a keen sense of smell and hearing to help them recognize the danger
quickly and gallop away. If they are being threatened, they can put up a decent fight
by using their legs or head to kick and blow like a sledge hammer.
Giraffes are herbivorous or plant eater. They use their great height and long neck to
reach the leaves at the top of trees. Their favorite leaves are mimosa and acacia.
Since they are unable to bend their neck, giraffes don’t eat grass. Their long upper
lips can help them to grab mouthfuls of leaves, tender shoot, or even twigs
effortlessly. They have a quite long tongue about 45 cm which may help them to pick
the smallest leaves off thorny plants.

Giraffes are only left fewer than their population in 100 years ago. Hunters kill them
for their thick hide which is used to make leather, their flesh for food, and their tail tuft
for fly brushes. They are now protected in national parks and game reserves. One of
the big herds can be found in Serengeti National Park of Tanzania.
