Prelim Reflection Paper

Our professor Doc. Angel Espedido gave us a task to have an extensive reading on the “Literature
Competencies in the K to 12 curriculums” and “Literature Teaching in the Philippines”. After reading
those learning materials, we need to make a reflection paper about those topics that has given to us. After
reading the learning material about Literature competencies in the K to 12 curriculums, I understand that
Literary competence is an essential concept and it was really effective to the K to 12 programs for
teaching literature in a second language because it provides a clear definition of what the reader must
acquire in order to read a literary work.
In addition, the entire purpose of language education is to enable students enhance their
communication skills. Literature is essential at all levels because it teaches learners to learn new
vocabulary, discourse functions, and proper sentence structures. It also improves the learners writing
abilities, competency skills and expands their understanding. Lastly, literature is being taught level by
level, as students begins, they are formally introduced to literary related lessons or topics in every grade
levels. Since it is how the process works, the expected literary competences must be learned by students,
and therefore accomplish. So basically, I consider this reason to conclude that literature has successfully
make its place in education where it directly focuses to bring every appointed literary skill and
competency to every grade level in the current curriculum. I myself, I have been immersed to the different
literary lessons during my grade school days, it’s one of my supporting reason for this matter to prove my
answer.
Furthermore, literature is something that everyone values and enjoys, regardless of age or
intelligence. As a result, a language educator has great capability to develop and improve a wide range of
abilities through the use of literature. Some of the major skills that can be developed through literature
include logically sequencing events or information, trying to predict what will happen next, visualizing
the poem or story and forming an image of it, recognizing what is real and fantasy and making the same
creatively, identifying facts and opinion in order to form arguments, and so on. As a result, literature may
encourage students to develop these talents in a pleasurable way. If each story or poem in the book is used
to build one ability, then a variety of stories or poems may be utilized to teach a variety of abilities while
also assisting students in comprehending the narrative or poem and developing vocabulary.
Moreover, games, activities, and worksheets are among methods for establishing these abilities.
Literature may also be utilized to enhance creativity and imagination through dramatization, enactment,
fantasy aspects, and so on. Games may be used to assist students develop their imaginations and plots for
stories, for example. Students can be invited to formulate questions based on the narrative's character,
events, dilemma, solution, setting, and so on, and then work in groups to discover answers, further
extending the story. Language teaching and learning may be made more interesting by opposing skills
with literature. Using literature to develop abilities and concepts can assist teachers in connecting with
students not just academically but also emotionally. As a result, literature teaching should address all
aspects in a comprehensive manner.
